Signing with the Sooners were Jason Baird, Chason Lane, Tydree Lewis and SaVita Spellmon. All will join the program when classes begin on August 23.
Baird is a junior college transfer from Utah Valley State College. He will compete in the long and triple jump for the Sooners. He earned all-league honors from Carmel (Calif.) High School after competing just one year in the jumping events. He began his track career as a distance runner and lettered in cross country, soccer and track in high school. He finished seventh in the triple jump at the NJCAA National Outdoor Championship and posted a regional qualifying mark in the triple jump in 2004. He served as team captain for two years at Utah Valley and was named Student-Athlete of the Year for 2003-2004 at Utah Valley. He posted career bests of 22-8 in the long jump and 49-6 in the triple jump while in the juco ranks.
Lane is a sprinter from McKinney, Texas. He will compete in the short sprints and relays for the Sooners. He finished third in the state meet in the 100 as a senior while competing for Celina High School. He was fifth in the state meet in the 200 as a senior. He won the district and regional titles in the 100 and 200 as a senior. He won the district title in the 100 and 200 as a sophomore and ran the anchor leg of the district champion 400-meter relay team his sophomore year. He qualified for AAU Regionals in the 100 and 200 and as a member of the 400-meter relay while competing for the Texas Action Track Club. He recorded career bests of 10.31 in the 100 and 21.4 in the 200 as a senior. He also played football at Celina and was a second team all-district selection as a senior at cornerback.
Lewis is a sprinter/jumper from Lovington, N.M. He won four state titles as a senior, winning the New Mexico high school championship in the triple jump, high jump and long jump in addition to running on the state champion 400-meter relay. Lewis won the 2004 Great Southwest Meet of Champions triple jump title. He was a two-time state champion as a junior, winning the high jump and triple jump crowns. He also finished third in the long jump as a junior. Lewis also competed in football and basketball for Lovington High School. He recorded personal bests of 23-1 in the long jump, 6-10.5 in the high jump and 49-0 in the triple jump.
Spellmon is a jumper from Luther and brings an impressive rsum to the Sooners. She is the Oklahoma state recordholder in the long jump with an 18-9 as a sophomore. That mark broke a record that had been on the books for 22 years and is the current state record. She won six state titles while competing for Luther. She won the state high school title in the high jump four years and won the state high school long jump title as a freshman and sophomore. She is a three-time national track and field qualifier and represented Oklahoma at the Great Southwest Meet of Champions in 2002 and 2003. She was undefeated as a freshman and sophomore in the long jump and high jump. She also has participated in AAU Junior Olympics, placing in regionals in the long jump, high jump, 100- and 200-meter dashes and the 400-meter relay. She also played basketball at Luther and was MVP of the team as a senior.
“These additions to our team will strengthen us in a number of areas,” said co-head coaches Jill Lancaster and Rodney Price. “Each of these athletes is a proven winner and all have the talent to help us in a number of events.”
