June 25, 2004 | Track and Field

NORMAN, Okla. -- Laverne Jones picked up where she left off at the NCAA Championships two weeks ago, winning her heat Friday in the 100-meter dash to advance to the final of the USA Track and Field Pre-Trials Sprint and Power Meet in Provo, Utah.

Jones finished with an 11.33 and is one of nine finalists scheduled to run on Saturday at the meet on the campus of Brigham Young University. She had the second best qualifying time in Friday's action.

Jones is one of several current and former Sooners who are competing in elite track and field championships this weekend.

Former Sooner Michael Blackwood won his heat of the 400 at the Jamaican National Senior Championship to advance to the finals. Blackwood, a former Big 12 champion and the top-ranked 400-meter runner in the world in 2003, finished his heat with a 45.79, the top qualifying time in the 400. Blackwood was a five-time All-American for the Sooners and ended his two-year OU career in 2000. Dwayne Duhaney, who finished his Sooner career in late May, finished 18th in the 400 with a 47.30.

Aldwyn Sappleton, who redshirted during the 2004 outdoor season while coming back from an injury, had the fifth best time in the 800 during the qualifying rounds. He won his heat with a 1:51.17.

Another former Sooner, Danny McFarlane, finished second in his heat in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a 49.64. McFarlane, who was third overall, was a member of the Jamaican Olympic team in 2000. McFarlane was an eight-time All-American while competing for the Sooners. He finished his OU career in 1997.

OU sophomore-to-be Nicola Maye is scheduled to compete in the 1500-meter run during the weekend's meet.

Another pair of Sooner sophomores-to-be, Jessica Eldridge and Yolanda Goff, are set to run in the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships in College Station. Eldridge, who has the fastest qualifying time in the 1500, saw the preliminary round in her event eliminated Friday and will run in the final on Sunday. Goff, who is ranked 19th in the 100 heading into the meet, will run her preliminary Saturday at 5:23 p.m. with the final scheduled for later Saturday.

The top two finishers in each event will qualify for the 2004 IAAF World Junior Championships in Grosetto, Italy, July 13-18.
