Laverne Jones, who just completed her OU career two weeks ago at the NCAA Championships, is competing in the USA Track and Field Pre-Trials Sprint and Power Meet in Provo, Utah. Jones, who will run the 100 prelims on Friday, has qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, and will represent the U.S. Virgin Islands at the Games in August. She will become the first Sooner woman in track and field to compete in the Olympic Games and will be running in the 100 and 200.
The Provo meet was put together by USA Track and Field to give America?s sprinters one more opportunity before the Olympic Trials to run against top competition. Jones was invited to participate in the meet as a future Olympian and based on her performances during the recently concluded collegiate season. The top nine from the Friday prelims advance to a Saturday final.
A pair of Sooner sophomores-to-be, Jessica Eldridge and Yolanda Goff, left Norman today to travel to the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships in College Station, Texas. Eldridge will run in the 1500 while Goff is entered in the 100. Eldridge will run the first round of the 1500 at 6:25 p.m. Friday. The final is set for 5:21 p.m. Sunday. Goff will run in the first round of the 100 at 5:23 p.m. Saturday with the final scheduled for 7:50 p.m. Saturday.
The top two finishers in each event will qualify for the 2004 IAAF World Junior Championships in Grosetto, Italy, July 13-18. Goff has the 19th best time entering the meet while Eldridge has the top qualifying time in the 1500 entering the meet.
Three other Sooners, Aldwyn Sappleton, Nicola Maye and Dwayne Duhaney, are in Kingston, Jamaica, competing in the Jamaican National Senior Championship. The Jamaican Olympic team will be selected following this meet. Sappleton and Maye are tentatively slated to run the 800 while Duhaney is entered in the 400. That meet begins Friday and runs through Sunday.
