OU Leads Stanford, 2-1; Game Resumes 9 a.m. Sunday

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso has been razzing her team about its propensity to always take the difficult route this postseason.

On Saturday evening, the weather made it difficult.

With OU leading Stanford 2-1 heading into the top of the sixth the game was postponed due to severe weather in the area.   The teams will finish the final two innings on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

“The team wanted to come back and finish the game tonight, but obviously this isn't a safe situation,” said Gasso.  “We've dealt with this before in 2000.  We just have to wait and be prepared tomorrow morning.  I think it will help the team because we have really come out strong of late.  We'll approach it like a new game and hope that our trend of hot starts continues.”

After scoring two runs in the first inning, the Sooners were having a difficult time of capitalizing on numerous opportunities to put the game away.  OU had left 10 runners on base through the first five innings and has now stranded 24 over the last 14 innings of action.

True to form during their postseason run, the Sooners scored first.  OU pounced on Stanford with two runs in the first inning.  A one-out double by Kristin Vesely began the rally.  An error on a Christina Enea grounder allowed Vesely to score from second.

Mariee Mena made that error even more costly when she knocked in her team-leading ninth run since regionals.  At that point, five of OU's nine WCWS runs had been scored after errors by the opposing team.

A potential run to Monday's WCWS Championship Game was more tumultuous by the postponement.  If OU can hold on to its 2-1 lead over Stanford, they will play UCLA at 1 p.m.   In order to reach the national championship game, OU would have to knock off the Bruins twice.  The “if necessary” game would begin at 6 p.m.

The television broadcast schedule is below:

This is not the first time that OU has had a WCWS game cancelled due to severe weather.  In 2000, OU was waiting to play Southern Mississippi on Friday evening when play was postponed to the following day.  OU defeated Southern Miss, 3-1.
