ACU Invitational (O)
May 13, 2004 | Track and Field
The Texas A&M All-Comers meet in College Station, Texas, was cancelled entirely after thunderstorms moved into the area early Thursday morning. Meanwhile the pole vaulters and high jumpers who had traveled to Abilene, Texas, had to wait for weather to move through before beginning competition. Another line of storms moved in, postponing the ACU Invitational and Sooner coaches made the decision to return to Norman. One competitor, Kris Glenn, opted to stay and compete in the men's high jump which was scheduled to start late Thursday evening.
As a result of the cancellation of the A&M meet, senior Robert Smith and co-head coach Jill Lancaster will leave for Manhattan, Kan., and the Ward Haylett Invitational Friday afternoon. Smith, who has already qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional in the long jump, will compete in the triple jump on Saturday afternoon in an attempt to get a regional qualifying mark. Smith has battled weather conditions all spring and has a season best that is inches away from a regional mark.
Meanwhile, the Sooners who headed to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Invitational are keeping an eye to the sky as storms were expected to move into that area on Friday. The Georgia Tech meet is scheduled to run Friday night and all day Saturday.
Qualifying marks for the regional must be recorded this weekend with the final date for a qualifying mark set for Sunday, May 16. The regional championship is scheduled for May 28-29 in College Station, Texas. Those who advance to the NCAA Championship will head to Austin, Texas, for that meet which is scheduled for June 9-12. Heading into this weekend, the Sooners had individuals qualified in 19 events and one relay that had met the regional qualifying mark.
