Martin opened the competition by clearing 15-11 on his first attempt. He then cleared 16-4.75 on his first try and was over on his first attempt at 16-10.75. He missed his three attempts at 17-4.50, the height that won the competition.
Junior Chaundra Allard won the javelin in the women's heptathlon, earning 611 points with her throw of 121-8. That mark helped her finish 13th overall in the two day competition. She earned 538 points with her 16-1.75 in the long jump and scored 625 points with her 2:35.53 in the 800, the final event of the heptathlon.
OU's other entry in the heptathlon, Ladonna Moore, was forced to pull out of the competition after getting injured while attempting a personal best in the high jump on Wednesday.
Caleb Turner was OU's only other competitor on Thursday. He ran the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 55.52 but did not advance to the final. Three of the nine who advanced came from Turner's heat.
The rest of the Sooners in Austin will compete in the Relays Friday and Saturday. A total of 27 Sooners will leave Friday afternoon for the Euler State Farm/Emporia State Relays to be held Saturday in Emporia, Kan.
