Sooners Send DM Relay to Notre Dame Meet

NORMAN, Okla. OU's women's distance medley relay left today for South Bend, Ind., and the Meyo Invitational meet. The quartet will be attempting to record an NCAA qualifying time in the relay and break a 23-year-old school record in Friday night's competition. The women's distance medley relay is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Friday.
Competing for the Sooners will be Catherine Odell, Kristi Cook, Nicola Maye and Jessica Eldridge. The relay has a best time of 11:53.27 this season which is 15 seconds away from the NCAA provisional mark in the event. The Sooners have the second fastest DMR time in the Big 12 this season.
The school record time of 11:32.56 was established in 1981 by Carol Sames, Felecia Moore, Siri Bjelland and Kellie Cathey. That foursome earned All-America honors in the distance medley relay in 1981.
Two schools have recorded automatic qualifying times in the women's distance medley relay heading into this weekend's action. Tenneessee and Brigham Young have automatic marks while Stanford, Kentucky, Washington and North Carolina have provisional marks heading into the weekend's action.
The Notre Dame meet and track have a history of producing NCAA qualifying marks. Four of the relays ranked in this week's Trackwire Dandy Dozen in the distance medley relay are entered in the field.
On Saturday, Odell will run in a mile event at 11:30 a.m. while Maye will compete in the mile run at 2:20 p.m. Cook is entered in an 800 at 12:10 p.m. Saturday and Eldridge will run in the 800 at 2:50 p.m. Eldridge already has a provisional qualifying mark in the mile and she currently ranks 11th on the NCAA qualifiers' list with a time of 4:47.48. She recorded that mark at the Clemson Invitational on Jan. 24.
The rest of the Sooners are taking a break from competition this weekend and will return to action Feb. 13-14 when they travel to the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
