Less than 12 hours after losing a heartbreaker to No. 10 Florida State, the No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners rebounded to shutout No. 7 Michigan 4-0 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic (Columbus, Ga.) Sunday morning. Oklahoma advances to play Central Michigan in the gold bracket consolation championship game. The 15-4-1 Sooners were led by Nicole Denes who tossed a two-hit shutout and Mariee Mena who blasted her first career home run and tallied three RBI.
Oklahoma gets a chance to avenge its loss to Central Michigan, who defeated the Sooners 3-2 during Leadoff Classic action on Friday evening. The rematch between the Sooners and Chippewas is scheduled to begin at Noon (CST).
Sophomore Mariee Mena single handidly gave OU a three run advantage in the early going. In the top of the second inning Mena hit a two-run single to right field that scored junior Heather Scaglione and freshman Jamie Fox. Mena struck again with a leadoff home run in the fifth inning. The Sooners weren't done in the fifth as junior April Valdez drove home Norrelle Dickson to put the Sooners up 4-0. Mena's blast was the first round-tripper of her career, while the three RBI were a career high.|

The Sooners chased Michigan ace Nicole Motycka after 4.2 innings. OU touched up Motycka for four earned runs on nine hits before she was relieved by senior Meghan Ritter.
On the flip side, OU starter Nicole Denes turned in another impressive performance. Denes, who has started every game in the Leadoff Classic, picked up her fifth shutout of the season as she stifled the Molverines all morning. The sophomore got stronger throughout the game as she recorded four strikeouts in the final three innings. She finished with six strikeouts while allowing just two Wolverine hits. Denes, who faced five batters over the minimum 21, improved to 11-4 with her ninth complete game of the year.
