Softball Wins, Avenges Loss To Central Michigan

February 29, 2004 | Softball

The No. 5 Oklahoma softball team avenged an earlier loss to Central Michigan by downing the Chippewas 8-2 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday afternoon.  Oklahoma finished in fifth place out of a field of 24 that included 15 ranked teams.  OU improved to 16-4-1 on the season and finished with a 4-2 record in the Leadoff Classic.  The Chippewas handed OU its third loss of the season on Friday evening by a score of 3-2.

Junior Christina Enea began things by picking up her sixth RBI of the tournament in the first inning when she drove in Norrelle Dickson.

Two Sooner errors allowed the Chippewas to tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning.  CMU wasn't done in the third inning as third baseman Lindsey Calme deposited a long ball over the left field fence and gave her team the 2-1 lead.

CMU's lead was short lived as OU immediately responded.  Enea started the rally with a double off the centerfield wall.  Junior catcher Heather Scaglione knocked her in to tie the game up at 2-2.  The Sooners would pull ahead in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single from April Valdez and extend the lead to 4-2 on a bases loaded walk to freshman Amber Spaulding.

The Sooners put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth as they scored five runs thanks to RBI by Norrelle Dickson, Jamie Fox and Scaglione.

Scaglione was named to the NFCA Leadoff Classic all-tournament team at the catching position.   She did her part on Sunday going 3-for-3 with two RBI.  She hit .474 for the tournament with six RBI, one home run and four runs scored.

Nicole Denes picked up her fourth win of the tournament and improved to 12-4 on the season.  Denes started every game for OU and threw 38.2 innings on the weekend.  Denes had a sparkling ERA of 1.27 and struck out 40 combined batters in the tournament.
