Sooners Travel to Clemson Invitational

January 23, 2004 | Track and Field

The University of Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams left for Clemson, S.C., early this morning to participate in Saturday's Clemson Invitational. The 10-team meet includes host Clemson, OU, Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State, Wake Forest, Georgia, Charlotte, and Coastal Carolina. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (eastern time) with the first event on the track set for 11:30 a.m. This will be OU's first time to participate in the Clemson Invitational.

Trackwire Rankings
The Sooner men are ranked 15th in the country in the Trackwire 25. Of the 10 teams in the meet this weekend at Clemson, the OU men are the only team ranked in the Trackwire 25. On the women's side, North Carolina is ranked seventh, Georgia and Florida State are tied for 14th, and Clemson is 22nd.

The Trackwire 25 projects a hypothetical score for the NCAA meet, factoring in injury reports and other variables supported by informationgathered from coaches and NCAA-qualifying competitions across the country. This projection is generated by scoring the Dandy Dozen, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event.

OU's DaBryan Blanton was named the top 60-meter sprinter in the country on Trackwire's Dandy Dozen. The Dandy Dozen is selected using quantitative values that measure performances in past major competitions (such as conference championships, national championships and Olympic competition), durability and freedom from injuries, demonstrated ability to compete well in multiple rounds of competition, ability in other events, head-to-head competition with other top athletes, and personal or seasonal bests. Blanton also was ranked sixth on the Dandy Dozen's list in the 200.

Senior LaVerne Jones was ranked sixth in the women's 60-meter dash on this week's Dandy Dozen while Aldwyn Sappleton was ranked 11th in the 800.

Blanton Honors
Sophomore DaBryan Blanton opened the week with Big 12 Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors. On Thursday, he was named the Spotlight Athlete of the Week by NCAASportsline.com.

In the first weekly ranking of athletes in the Big 12, several Sooners were among the top 10. Sophomore DaBryan Blanton leads the conference in the 60-meter dash and senior LaVerne Jones is ranked second in the women's 60. Aldwyn Sappleton ranks first in the league in the 600 and Jessica Eldridge leads the conference in the 1000.

Last Week at the Oklahoma Classic
DaBryan Blanton won the 60-meter dash with an NCAA qualifying mark of 6.62 to highlight the action in the Oklahoma Track Classic at the Mosier Indoor Center in front of crowd of more than 750. Blanton posted an NCAA provisional mark in the prelims with a 6.70, then lowered his time in the final 30 minutes later. His time of 6.62 is the best time in the country to date. The time by Blanton also set a meet and facility record, beating the mark set by Kim Collins of TCU in 2001.

OU senior LaVerne Jones won the women's 60, posting NCAA provisional qualifying times in the prelims and final. Her time in the prelim of 7.35 was the best time posted in the first round. She dropped her time of 7.31 in the final, missing the automatic qualifying mark by .01 seconds.

The Sooners got victories from Nicola Maye, who doubled in the 800 and the mile; Jessica Eldridge, who won the 1000; the women's distance medley (Catherine Odell, Michelle Thomas, Kristi Cook and Eldridge) with a meet record of 11:57.42; Leslie Dunlap in the pole vault; LaDonna Moore in the triple jump; Aldwyn Sappleton in the 600; and Scott Martin and Austin Landreth, who tied for first in the men's pole vault.
