The majority of the scholarship athletes were signed to help the Sooners in the cross country/distance events. Head cross country coach Rodney Rothoff signed 12 runners to letters of intent.
Signing with the Sooners in cross country/distance were Jason Coleman of Watonga, a nine-time state champion in track and field in the 800, mile and two mile and a three-time cross country state champion; Tyler Schhmiedeberg of Edmond, a three-time state cross country champion and four-time track champion in the mile and two mile; Andrew Tower of Stillwater, a state champion in cross country as a junior and runner-up as a senior and six-time All-State honoree in track and field in the mile and two mile; Stephen Taylor of Edmond, a two-time conference champion in the mile for Casady who also won the conference title in cross country as a senior; Kevin Miller of Flower Mound, Texas, a two-time Texas state high school All-State cross country team member; Jason Penland of Flower Mound, Texas, who was a three-time All-State honoree in soccer for Marcus High School; Salaheden Hussein, one of top distance runners from Toronto, Ontario; and Silverus Kimeli of Eldoret, Kenya, who transferred to OU from Arkansas. Kimeli will have one year of eligibility left after competing with the Razorbacks on seven Southeastern Conference and two NCAA Championship teams. He is a two-time NCAA Indoor runner-up in the 5000 meter. He will be working on a master's degree in epidemiology while competing for the Sooners.
Also signing with the Sooners in the distance events were Jessica Eldridge of Tulsa, a four-time state champion in the 800, mile and two mile and three-time cross country All-State honoree; Catherine Odell of Enid, an All-State honoree in track and cross country who was the track and cross country MVP for her high school team; Kristi Cook of Flower Mound, Texas, a two-time Texas All-State selection in cross country for Marcus High School who won the state title in the 800 as a senior; and Andrea Bonner of Tulsa, who earned All-State honors in cross country and softball while playing for Jenks, the second ranked high school track team in the U.S.
Signing with the Sooners in pole vault were Scott Martin of Tulsa who was a three-time Oklahoma state champion in Class 5A; Chris Williams of Elk City, a two-time Oklahoma state champion in Class 3A and Jacob Williams of Chanute, Kan., a two-time Kansas state champion in class 4A who also earned first team All-State honors in basketball as a senior.
Other signees included Ashley Johnson of Houston, Texas, a transfer from Garden City CC who was a member of the third place 1600-meter relay at the 2003 indoor and outdoor junior college national championships; LaDonna Moore of Austin, Texas, who was the 2003 Outdoor Field Event Athlete of the Meet at the national junior college championship after winning the heptathlon title as well as the outdoor triple jump for Garden City CC; Melissa Shipley of Mansfield, Texas, who was undefeated in the 300 hurdles until the state meet and was a district champion in the high jump; Yolanda Goff of Tulsa, a two-time state champion in the 100 while competing for Booker T. Washington; and Jonathan McMillan of Choctaw, who won the state 5A title in the high jump as a senior and was an all-conference honoree in football.
'We believe we have addressed areas on our team where we needed to add people and we believe we have added talented individuals who also are going to be great additions to the Sooner family' said co-head coaches Jill Lancaster and Rodney Price. 'We added people in areas that lost competitors to graduation and we have significantly strengthened a number of areas on our team."
