After four consecutive meets on the road to open the 2003 outdoor season, the University of Oklahoma track and field teams will be back in Norman Saturday, April 12, to host the 34th annual John Jacobs Invitational. This will be the only home meet of the 2003 season as construction continues in the area of the Mosier Indoor Facility and Jacobs Field.
There will be no admission charged for the meet and spectators are encouraged to use the parking lot north of Jacobs Track (enter from Brooks Street).
Events Schedule
Competition in the field events will begin at 10 a.m. with prelims in four running events starting at 11 a.m. The afternoon session will begin at 1 p.m. A complete schedule follows.
The Field
Joining the host Sooners in the meet are the men's and women's teams from Allen County CC, Bacone, Cowley CC, Garden City CC, Johnson County CC, Langston, Oklahoma Baptist, Oklahoma Christian, St. Gregory's, Southern Methodist, Southern Nazarene and North Texas.
The Last Time Out
Freshman DaBryan Blanton finished fourth in the 100-meter dash Saturday at the 76th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays to highlight three days of solid performances by the Sooner track and field teams. Blanton ran a 10.24, shattering the NCAA regional qualifying mark.
On Friday, another freshman, Kevin Bookout, won the section B shot put title with a throw of 57-7. The throw was an NCAA regional qualifying mark and was the sixth best throw in OU school history. That performance came just four days after he joined the track team following the 2002-03 basketball season.
LaVerne Jones ran an 11.42 to finish seventh in the women's 100-meter dash on the final day of the meet. The time was her fastest of the season and the third NCAA regional qualifying time in as many races for the junior who earned All-America honors in two events during the indoor season. She also ran on OU's 800-meter relay team that posted a 1:38.24, the fifth fastest time in school history. Joining her on that relay were Natasha Franklin, Ashley Freeman and Terrika Warren.
The Relays marked the season opener for most of the Sooner pole vaulters and the four who competed Saturday all posted NCAA regional qualifying marks. Leslie Dunlap finished eighth in the women's section A with a 12-1.5. Robin Hanna was eighth in the men's section A with a 16-10.75 followed by Michael Westlund, ninth with a 16-10.75, and Austin Landreth, 13th with a 16-4.75.
Tiffany Davis finished eighth in the invitational 100-meter hurdles with a 13.77 while Joe Butler continued his comeback from injury, clearing a season best 6-6.75 to finish 11th in the men's high jump section B.
The men's sprint medley relay finished sixth with a time of 3:19.53. The quartet of Blanton, Dwayne Duhaney, L'eron George and Aldwyn Sappleton recorded the ninth best time in school history. The women's distance medley relay, made up of Alaina Dearman, Nicola Maye, Aisha Stringer and Kim Thomas, finished eighth with an 11:54.64, a school record for the Sooners.
Blanton had run a 10.19 in the prelims of the 100 on Friday, tying him with Marquis Davis of Mississippi State for the fastest qualifying time. The mark was another NCAA regional qualifying time and ranks as the fourth fastest in OU school history. Also on Friday, senior Kyle Bookout finished seventh in section A of the discus with a throw of 178-8, his fourth NCAA regional qualifying mark in as many meets. In the women's section B pole vault, Lindsay Bourne was sixth with a vault of 11-7.75. Jones ran on OU's 1600-meter relay which finished 18th in the preliminaries with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 3:45.46. Joining her on that relay were Natasha Franklin, Lameisa Thomas and Terrika Warren. The men's 400-meter relay team, made up of Blanton, Cory Crosby, George and Robert Smith, posted an NCAA regional qualifying time of 40.68 and finished 10th in the preliminaries.
In action Thursday, the quartet of Kim Thomas, Nicola Maye, Alaina Dearman and Aisha Stringer posted the fifth fastest time in school history to finish fourth in the 3200-meter relay with an 8:53.79. Stringer anchored the relay with an 800 time of 2:09.6 as the Sooners just missed pulling into third place. Joe McNair and Jimmy Buchanan ran in the men's 5,000-meter Thursday night, finishing seventh and 15th overall. McNair posted a 14:44.20. a career best at that distance by nearly 13 seconds. Buchanan finished the race in 15:08.84.
