Strong Posts Four Career Bests To Finish 10th At A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Sophomore Dan Strong posted four career bests in two days of competition to finish 10th in the bronze division of the men's decathlon at the College Station Combined Friday. Strong finished with 5,575 points in his first combined compettiion of the 2003 outdoor season. OU's Chaundra Allard finished 10th in the gold division of the heptathlon with 4,468 points.

Former Big 12 champion Austra Skujyte, who competed for Kansas State, won the women's gold heptathlon with 5,787 points. Ron Veillon of Houston won the men's bronze decathlon division with 6,702 points.

Strong recorded a career best 12.01 in the 100 to open competition on Thursday. He followed with a career best of 21-7.5 in the long jump, a 37-1.25 in the shot put, a 6-2.75 in the high jump and a 53.93 in the 400. He opened day two with a 16.61 in the 110-meter high hurdles and a 103-6 in the discus. He then added a career best 155-2 in the javelin and a career best 4:56.94 in the 1500. His final point total was just 191 points short of a career best despite failing to score any points in the pole vault, one of his best events in the decathlon.

Allard recorded a 15.29 in the 100-meter hurdles, a 4-10 in the high jump, a 34-0.75 in the shot put and a 27.09 in the 200 in the first day of competition. She finished today with a 17-3.75 in the long jump, a 103-11 in the javelin and a 2:33.11 in the 800.

The rest of the Sooner track and field teams will compete in the College Station Relays Saturday.
