NORMAN, Okla. -
In a final tune-up before the Big 12 Championships, the OU men's and women's track and field teams will host the final indoor meet of the 2003 season Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Mosier Indoor Facility.
Field events will begin at 10 a.m. with the weight throw and the triple jump. The pole vault will begin at 11 a.m. and the first event on the track will be the prelims in the 60-meter hurdles, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The running events will follow a rolling time schedule with the final event on the track set to be the men's mile relay.
In the Field
As one of the few meets in the country this weekend (most teams are taking off prior to conference meets Feb. 28-March 1), the Sooner Indoor has drawn a mixture of complete teams and small groups of entries from other programs. As of the entry declaration deadline, representatives from the following schools will be joining OU in the field (men and women unless otherwise indicated): Oklahoma State, Abilene Christian, Arkansas women, Arkansas State, Fort Hayes State men, Hutson-Tillotson College, Kansas, Missouri Southern, New Mexico State, Odessa College women, Oral Roberts, Paul Quinn College, Southern Methodist, Southwest Christian College, Texas Tech, Tulsa and North Texas. Additionally, unattached and club athletes will compete in some events.
Last Year At The Sooner Indoor
OU's Aldwyn Sappleton ran a 1:50.55 to win the 800-meter run and break the NCAA provisional qualifying standard by .25 seconds in the 2002 Sooner Indoor.
Two facility records, nine meet records, one NCAA automatic mark and 10 NCAA provisional marks were posted in the meet.
Junior L'eron George put his name in the OU records books, finishing fourth in the 60-meter dash in a school-record time of 6.78. George's time broke the record of 6.79 set by Shomari Wilson in 1999.
OU's pole vaulters continued their successful ways with senior Michael McNamara and sophomore Leslie Dunlap winning their events. Both cleared NCAA provisional heights but have automatic marks already to their credit. McNamara won the men's event with a 17-0.75, outjumping Kansas' Vadim Gvozdetski, who also cleared 17-0.75 but had more misses. Dunlap continued her battle with Texas A&M's Erica Boren. Both cleared 12-10 but Dunlap was declared the winner with fewer misses.
A total of 25 season best marks were posted by the Sooners at the meet and at least half of those were OU career best marks as well.
The Last Time Out
The Sooners went two different meets last weekend as the pole vaulters and shot putter Megan Crystal competed at the Tyson Invitational on Friday while the rest of the Sooner team traveled to the ISU Classic and competed Friday and Saturday. Results from each meet were impressive as 40 season bests were recorded in the weekend of action.
Junior LaVerne Jones recorded a 23.94 to win the 200-meter dash at the ISU Classic. Senior Jimyria Hicks finished second to Jones in the 200 with a 24.20. Other top Sooner finishers in first day action in Ames included L'eron George, who finished fifth in the 200; Lucretia Rimmer, who was ninth in the long jump; Cory Crosby, who was 10th in the long jump; and the women's distance medley, ninth.
Performances by senior Aisha Stringer and sophomore Aldwyn Sappleton highlighted the second day for the teams on the second day at Iowa State. Stringer cut nearly four seconds off her previous season best to finish third in the 800 with a 2:08.81. Sappleton, who ran the 800 for just the second time this season, cut more than a second off his previous 800 time, finishing sixth with a 1:49.21.
Freshman DaBryan Blanton, a redshirt on the Sooner football team last fall, made his season debut on the track team, finishing third in the 60 with a time of 6.75, just .01 off the school record. George finished fifth with a season best 6.81. Other top 10 finishes for the Sooners on the second day included Tiffany Davis, second in the 60-meter hurdles; Kim Thomas, second in the 600-yard run; Hicks, third in the 60-meter dash; Rimmer, fifth in the triple jump with a season best 39-8; the women's 1600-meter relay which finished sixth; Kelsey Moore, who was ninth in the high jump; Robert Smith, who was 10th in the triple jump.
Meanwhile, junior Leslie Dunlap posted her season best as one of five vaulters to clear 12-8 in the Tyson Invitational and finished third overall. Sophomore Lindsey Bourne and freshman Devon Fox cleared 12-2 to tie for seventh. Junior Mary Waytula also cleared 12-2 and finished ninth with more misses. The performances by Dunlap, Fox and Waytula were all season bests and the marks by Fox and Waytula were OU career bests. Michael Westlund finished fourth in the men's pole vault at the Tyson with a season best of 16-4.75.
