NORMAN, Okla. - OU sophomore Jason Stanley was named Big 12 Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week today for his performances over the weekend at the Radio Shack/Missouri Southern State Open. It marks the second time in his Sooner career for Stanley to earn the award. He was the first winner of the award during the 2002 indoor season after winning the OU All Comers meet with an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
Stanley won his second consecutive 60-meter hurdle title of the 2003 season Saturday at the meet in Joplin. He posted his third NCAA provisional qualifying time in four races this season to win the race with a 7.82. That time is just .03 off his OU career best and the Sooner school record he set last year as a freshman. Stanley had the third fastest time in the prelims at the meet, then cut nearly .30 seconds off his prelim time for the win.
Stanley only competed in two indoor meets for the Sooners last season, battling injuries throughout the indoor season before missing the entire outdoor season. His career best time of 7.79 at the Iowa State Classic last February earned him a spot in the NCAA Championships but he false started in the preliminaries and was disqualified.
He is the first Sooner to win the award this season in the third week of the indoor track and field season. Stanley and his Sooner teammates will be in action in Norman this Saturday when they host the third anual J.D. Martin Invitational. Field events begin at 10 a.m. at the Mosier Indoor Facility with track events scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
