BERKELEY, Calif. - Sooner sophomore-to-be Dan Strong finished 11th in the USA Junior National Combined Events Championship late Wednesday. Strong posted two career best marks in the competition, his first since an injury forced him to withdraw from the Big 12 Outdoor Championships after the first event in the decathlon. He finished the two-day competition with 5,510 points.
Strong, who is from Enid, posted a career best in the javelin, 125-1, on the second day of competition after establishing a career best mark in the shot put on the first day with a 39-5.25.
This competition marks his return to action after a hamstring injury he suffered at the end of the 100-meter dash, the first event of the decathlon, forced him to withdraw from the conference meet on May 17.
Strong was the first of several current and former Sooners to compete in the U.S. Junior and Senior Nationals as well as the national championships in Jamaica and Canada this week.
Sophomores-to-be Austin Landreth and Lindsey Bourne will be vaulting on Friday and Saturday at the U.S. Junior Nationals while senior Jimyria Hicks and former Sooners Alesha Peel and LaBoris Bean are entered in sprint and hurdles races. Junior-to-be Leslie Dunlap, who had the best provisional mark, has been added to the women's pole vault field and will compete on Sunday in the senior national meet.
Sophomore-to-be Chaundra Allard will be competing in the heptathlon in the Canadian National Senior meet on Saturday and Sunday. Raoul Harvey, Sand Swaby, Aldwyn Sappleton, Danny McFarlane and Michael Blackwood will be competing in the Jamaican National Championships over the weekend. -
