Dunlap Earns NCAA T&F All-America Honors

BATON ROUGE, La. - Sophomore Leslie Dunlap cleared 13-1.5 to finish sixth in the women's pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday, the first day of the meet. She earned All-America honors for the first time in her Sooner career with that finish. She also earned three team points for the Sooners.
The mark Dunlap cleared was her second best mark of the season by .25 inches. She was ranked 15th in the nation heading into the meet with the 13-1.75 that she posted on May 9 when she won the Abilene Christian Invitational pole vault title.
Dunlap cleared the opening height (12-3.50) on her first attempt, cleared the second height (12-9.50) on her second attempt, then cleared the third height (13-1.50) on her second try. She missed all three attempts at 13-5.25, the final height cleared by any of the competitors. She came close to clearing that height on her third attempt but brushed the bar on her way over.
Tracy O'Hara of UCLA won the meet, clearing 13-5.25, before winning a jump off with Andrea Wildrick of Liberty. Becky Holliday of Oregon also cleared 13-5.25 but had more misses than the first two vaulters.
Four other vaulters cleared 13-1.5 and placing was determined by the number of misses and clean clearances. Kathleen Donoghue of Stanford got fourth place with three misses at 13-3.50 but she had cleared every height to that point on her first attempt. Rhian Clarke of Houston was fifth with a miss on her first attempt at 13-1.50. Dunlap edged Jennifer Ashcroft of Nevada for sixth place by clearing 13-1.50 on her second attempt; Ashcroft cleared the height on her final attempt.
Of the top eight finishers, Dunlap and Donoghue are the only non seniors.
The performance tonight ended a string of frustrating NCAA performances for Dunlap. The 2002 outdoor meet marked the fourth time she had qualified for the NCAA meet (indoor and outdoor combined). She finished 12th in the NCAA Indoor in 2001 and was 14th in the 2002 NCAA Indoor meet. She qualified for the NCAA Outdoor last year but did not clear the opening height at the meet.
The Sooners will have three competitors on Friday when Elk City freshman Austin Landreth, Choctaw junior Michael Westlund and Tulsa senior Michael Westlund will compete in the pole vault. Action is slated to start at 6:30 p.m.
