Sooner T&F Heads To Last Competitions Before Big 12 Meet

NORMAN, Okla. - Members of the University of Oklahoma track and field teams will head south this weekend to participate in a pair of meets. On Friday, Jimmy Buchanan and Brandon Kissack will head to Arlington and the UTA Open to run in the 5,000-meter event that begins at 6:55 p.m. The rest of the Sooner team will be heading to the Texas Invitational for competition on Saturday. Field events begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with events on the track scheduled to start at 11:20 a.m.

Joining the host Longhorns and the Sooners are men's and women's teams from Florida, Baylor, Florida State, Houston, Southwest Texas, Texas A&M and Texas-San Antonio.

The Last Time Out, Part 1
Patience is a virtue and the Sooner track and field athletes who went to the UN Twilight Invitational finally got their wait for good weather rewarded. The end result was victories by six Sooners and season bests for 20 others.
Winners for OU included Michael McNamara with a 17-2 in the pole vault; Amanda Warehime with a 45-10 in the shot put; Veronica Clayborne with a 36-1.25 in the triple jump; Joey McNair with a 3:58.30 in the 1500; Brontez Steele with a 50.18 in the 400; and Kelli O'Rourke with a 2:20.20 in the 800.
The Sooner men went 1-2-3 in the 1500 with Brandon Kissack finishing second and Jimmy Buchanan coming in third. OU was 1-2 in the women's shot put with Megan Crystal finishing second. OU also got a second and third in the men's high jump from Kyle Blair and Kris Glenn.
Crystal's fourth-place distance in the discus, 142-10, marked a career best for the second time in three competitions.

The Last Time Out, Part 2
A total of 23 student-athletes as well as coaches and support staff traveled to Des Moines, Iowa, for the 93rd annual Drake Relays. Redshirt freshman Darren Hutchins recorded a collegiate career best of 32:40.48 in the men's invitational 10,000-meter run to open OU's competition in the meet. Hutchins' time was good for 23rd place in the final and his time ranks ninth all-time in Sooner history.
Three other Sooners competed on Thursday. Junior Robin Hanna cleared 15-3 in the university men's pole vault to finish 18th and freshman Austin Landreth failed to clear the opening height.
Senior Sand Swaby was the lone competitor for the Sooner women on Thursday. She finished seventh in her heat of the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 1:05.03 and did not advance to the final.
On Friday, junior Aisha Stringer posted a career best 2:09.69 to finish third in the women's 800-meter run Friday. The time improved her season and career best mark, set just last weekend, by nearly a second.
Stringer's finish was just one of the highlights for the Sooners during OU's second day in Des Moines. In the women's shot put, freshman Amanda Warehime finished sixth with a throw of 46-5.5.
In preliminary action, junior Tiffany Davis advanced to the final in the 100-meter hurdles with the seventh fastest qualifying time. Her mark of 14.07 was good for second place in her heat. The men's 1600-meter relay finished first in its heat with a 3:10.12.
On Saturday, a day when the meet was held up by thunderstorms, the Sooner relay entries took the spotlight.
The women's shuttle hurdle relay finished second with a school record 57.58. Running on that relay were Fallon Carter, Swaby, Chaundra Allard and Davis. Davis later finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.33.
The men's sprint medley relay was third with a 3:22.72. Running on that foursome were L'eron George, Raoul Harvey, Aldwyn Sappleton and Moses Washington. The men's 1600-meter relay finished fourth with a 3:09.29. That quartet included Ernest Lewis, Harvey, Washington and Sappleton. The women's sprint medley relay also was fourth with a 3:58.35. That relay included Alicia Emanuel, LaKisha Robinson, Kim Thomas and Stringer.

Big 12 Athlete of the Week
Sophomore Leslie Dunlap became a three-time winner of Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors March 18, earning the award the first week of the outdoor season. She had won twice during the indoor season.

NCAA Update
Sophomore Leslie Dunlap became OU's first provisional qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with her winning vault at the Hurricane Invitational March 16. It marked the 11th consecutive meet for her to clear at least a provisional mark. The men's 1600-meter relay team which had a season-best 3:06.49 to win the John Jacobs Invitational. Aldwyn Sappleton added his name to the list with a 1:48.87 in the 800 at the Michael Johnson/Southwestern Bell Classic.

Next Up
The Sooner pole vaulters are scheduled to compete in the Abilene Christian Invitational on Thursday and that will be that last competition for OU until the Big 12 Championships May 17-19 in Columbia, Mo.
