COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Michael Westlund cleared a season best 17-6.5, then missed on his next three attempts to finish second in the pole vault at the Big 12 Track and Field Championship. Brian Hunter of Texas won the title, clearing 18-0.5.

Despite senior Michael McNamara going out without clearing a height, the Sooner men scored well in the pole vault, picking up 20 points to finish the second day of the meet in fifth place. In addition to Westlund's second place finish, Brett Corlett was fourth, Robin Hanna was fifth and Austin Landreth was sixth.

Westlund's vault was a NCAA provisional qualifying mark and improves his chances of earning an invitation to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 29-June 1.

In the women's heptathlon, freshman Chaundra Allard held onto sixth place during the final three events and junior Taylor Cates moved into eighth place on the first event of the second day of competition, then held on to earn a medal.

The Sooner women also got points from senior Sand Swaby, who was fifth in the high jump with a career best 5-8.75. OU is tied for seventh after two days with eight points.

After the day of preliminaries, the Sooner men had qualified four for the finals while the women had two qualifiers for the running finals on Sunday.

The Sooners had some hard luck on Saturday. Senior Ben Winter had to pull out of the second day of the decathlon because of an injury. Senior Edwin Jones injured his hamstring in the 100-meter dash prelims and had to scratch from the 200. A pair of Sooners, Aldwyn Sappleton and Moses Washington, ended up in the same heat of the 800-meter run, a race that advanced the five heat winners and next three fastest times. The duo ran together throughout the race, sharing the lead. A Kansas runner challenged late and Sappleton won at the wire. Washington finished third in the heat, but was 16th in the standings and did not advance.

Sooner men who qualified today for Sunday's finals were L'eron George in the 100 and 200; Raoul Harvey in the 400 and Sappleton in the 800. Sooner women who advanced included Tiffany Davis in the 100-meter hurdles and LaKisha Robinson in the 400-meter dash.

Several events will have finals only on Sunday, including eight field events finals with OU entries scheduled for seven. The women's pole vault, which includes four Sooner entries, should be a highlight for OU. In addition, there will be final only action in the 400-meter relays, 1600-meter relays, 3000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run with Sooner entries in all but the women's 5,000-meter run.

Action resumes at 10 a.m. Sunday with the women's javelin final. The final event is the men's 1600-meter relay which is set for 6:30 p.m.
