Women's Golf Team Captures First Tournament Title

NORMAN, OKla. - The Oklahoma women's golf team defended its Susie Maxwell Berning Classic title by posting a 33-stroke win at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman today. The tournament was held despite harsh weather conditions that dropped over two inches of rain on the course the day prior to competition.
Oklahoma sophomore Lisa Meldrum took individual honors with a five-under-par 211. It marked the first outright title for Meldrum while competing at OU (she also tied for first at the 2001 Big 12 Championships, before losing in a playoff). Weather conditions did not affect tee times either day, and did not keep Arkansas-Little Rock senior Olof Maria Jonsdottia from firing an eagle on the par-four fifth hole and carding a hole-in-one on the par-three sixth hole during the second round of play.
Meldrum paced the Sooners with rounds of 70, 70 and 71. Senior Wendy Martin and sophomore Hope Edge tied for fourth place with scores of 223. Claiming seventh place was junior Allison Johnson with a score of 226, while senior Jennifer Tannehill carded a 231 for a 20th place finish. Freshman Emily Milberger carded a 239 for 46th place, while newcomers Jenni Nimmo and Jaime White placed 77th and 81st respectively. Also carding scores for the Sooners were seniors Betsy Berry and Jennifer James. Berry shot a final round 85 and James turned in rounds of 79 and 83 before having to withdraw.
Oklahoma's next competition will be the Big 12 Championships, which will be held in Manhattan, Kan., at Colbert Hills on April 19-21. - OU -
