LAWRENCE, Kan. - OU sophomore Chaundra Allard had two third-place finishes, a fourth and a sixth in the first four events of the two-day heptathlon at the Kansas Relays to complete the day ranked in second place with 2,836 points. She trails event leader Koya Webb of Wichita State by 335 points.
The women's heptathlon and men's decathlon were the opening events in the 75th annual Kansas Relays on Wednesday. Both will conclude on Thursday with the first action beginning at 8:30 a.m.
OU junior Taylor Cates isn't far behind with 2,776 points. On the men's side, Pat Pyle of Kansas State leads after five events of the decathlon with 3,758 points. OU senior Ben Winter has 3,386 points and Sooner freshman Dan Strong has 3,185 points.
Allard was third in the shot put and in the 100-meter hurdles, fourth in the high jump and sixth in the 200-meter dash. She got 821 points for her time of 15.16 in the hurdles to boost her into second place. Cates was solid as well, finishing fourth in the 200, second in the shot put, fifth in the high jump and seventh in the hurdles. Her time of 15.56 in the hurdles produced her largest point total of the day, 769 points.
Winter had a third-place finish in the shot put and was fifth in the 400-meter dash. He produced his most points, 740, with his 11.40 in the 100-meter dash. Strong, competing in just his second collegiate decathlon, tied for fourth in the high jump, and produced his most points, 711, with a 52.32 in the 400-meter dash.
