Sooner Sophomore Earns Second Conference Honor

February 04, 2002 | Track and Field

OU sophomore Leslie Dunlap was named women's Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after winning Saturday's J.D. Martin Invitational title with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 13-5.75.

Dunlap also earned conference track and field athlete of the week on Jan. 21 after finishing fourth in the women's elite collegiate division at the USA Track and Field Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev.

Dunlap, who is from Choctaw, Okla., is currently the fourth ranked pole vaulter in the nation and the mark Saturday was an all-time best in the Big 12 Conference for women. It also changed the school record she had set just two weeks ago at the Oklahoma Track Classic and improved her Sooner career best by another two inches.

The mark set a meet record in the second annual meet which is named for longtime Sooner coach and OU's first All-American in pole vault, J.D. Martin.

Her effort Saturday marked the fifth time in as many meets this year for Dunlap to beat an NCAA qualifying standard (the other four were provisional marks). It also was the third time for her to clear 13-0 or better in the last four meets.

Other Sooner track and field athletes who have been honored this season include freshman Jason Stanley, who was named the male track and field athlete of the week for the week of January 7 after tying the OU school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a 7.88, and Michael McNamara, who earned the honor on Jan. 21 after vaulting 18-0.5, an NCAA automatic qualifying mark, at January's Sooner Indoor. McNamara is currently ranked first in the nation in the vault with that effort.

Dunlap and her Sooner teammates will head to Ames, Iowa, this weekend for the two-day Iowa State Invitational.
