LINCOLN, Neb. - Redshirt freshman Aldwynn Sappleton is learning to run his race and, as a result, the Sooners added another Big 12 individual title in Saturday's Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship.
Sappleton had the fifth fastest qualifying time in the 600-yard run on Friday, then ran a 1:08.76 to edge Texas Tech's Jonathon Johnson by .05 seconds in today's final.
His victory was the bright spot for the Sooners on the second day of the meet. The OU men finished ninth overall with 41.50 points while the Sooner women dropped from a first-day tie for fifth to 12th.
Nebraska edged Texas for the men's title and Texas edged the Huskers for the women's title in one of the closes meets in conference history.
Sappleton later anchored OU's 1600-meter relay team which posted an NCAA provisional time of 3:08.87 to finish just behind Baylor's winning time of 3:08.15. Joining him on that relay were Raoul Harvey, Ernest Lewis, and Moses Washington.
The Sooner men had three vaulters score as the top four finishers all cleared the same height, an NCAA provisional mark of 17-5.5. Placing was determined by the number of misses. Nebraska's Eric Eshbach was declared the winner with fewer misses. OU's Michael McNamara was third and Michael Westlund was fourth. Sooner freshman Austin Landreth tied for fifth with a 16-6.
The OU men also got points from their runners in the 60-meter dash as Quentin Morgan was sixth and Edwin Jones was seventh in tonight's final.
Freshman Amanda Warehime's sixth-place finish in the shot put was one of the highlights for the Sooner women on day two. OU also got points from Megan Crystal, who finished eighth in the shot, Tiffany Davis, who was seventh in the 60-meter hurdles, and Aisha Stringer and Kim Thomas, who were sixth and seventh in the 800-meter run. Stringer and Thomas then joined Alicia Emanuel and LaKisha Robinson on OU's eighth-place 1600-meter relay.
OU will send entries to NCAA qualifier meets next weekend. The entrants and the location of the meets to be entered will be determined early next week. OU already has two NCAA automatic qualifiers, McNamara and Leslie Dunlap, who won the Big 12 women's indoor pole vault title on Friday. Westlund, Landreth, Sappleton (800), Jason Stanley (60 hurdles) and the men's 1600-meter relay have provisional qualifying marks.
