LINCOLN, Neb. - They had met three times this season and the Big 12 Championships would mark the fourth meeting between OU sophomore Leslie Dunlap and Texas A&M's Erica Boren in the pole vault. Dunlap beat Boren a week ago to take the edge and she won again tonight to win her second confernce pole vault title (Dunlap won the Big 12 Outdoor title last May). She set a Big 12 meet record with her winning vault of 13-3.75.

"I was really nervous going into the competition. I just wanted to go out and compete hard and do the best that I could. I would have liked to have cleared 13-7, but I didn't quite make it. I guess I'll wait two weeks and try and do it at nationals. It really feels great to win the Big 12s. I am really excited," Dunlap said.

The Choctaw sophomore's performance led the Sooner women to a fifth place finish after the first day while the Sooner men, who have their best final events on Saturday, were 11th.

Freshman Lindsey Bourne was fourth in the vault with an 11-10 and redshirt freshman Jamie Lillie was ninth with an 11-4.25. Sophomore Mary Waytula, who has been vaulting in competition just over two months, tied a season best with a 10-10.25 to tie for 10th.

The Sooner women also finished seventh in the distance medley relay while the OU men were fourth in that event.

The Sooner men advanced three to Saturday's finals. Quentin Morgan, a former Sooner football player who began training with the track team about a month ago, set a school record in the 60-meter dash with a 6.76 in the semifinal. He slipped past the record of 6.78 set just a week ago by junior L'eron George. Morgan had the fourth fastest semifinal time. Senior Edwin Jones also advanced to the final with the eighth best time, 6.78.

Redshirt freshman Aldwynn Sappleton recorded the fifth fastest time in the 600-yard run to advance to the final.

Sooner women also advanced three to Saturday's final. Junior Tiffany Davis had the eighth fastest time in the semifinals in the 60-meter hurdles to move on to the final. The top six times in the 60-meter hurdle semifinals were NCAA provisional marks.

Junior Aisha Stringer and sophomore Kim Thomas advanced in the 800-meter run. Thomas had the fourth best time with a 2:12.46 while Stringer had the eighth best time, 2:13.57, in the preliminaries.

Action resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday with the final events of the men's heptathlon. The remaining field event finals begin at 1:30 p.m. while the running event finals are scheduled to start at 3:25 p.m.
