NORMAN, Okla. -
OU sophomore Leslie Dunlap was named women's Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week today after finishing fourth in the women's elite collegiate division at Saturday's USA Track and Field Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. Her mark Saturday improved her OU career best in the pole vault by nearly three inches.
Dunlap, who is from Choctaw, Okla., met the NCAA provisional standard with her vault of 13-1.5 on Saturday. Her mark is one of the top marks in the country and is one of the leaders in the Big 12 Conference as well. Her performance Saturday marked the second time this season in as many meets for her to bypass the NCAA provisional standard. Her mark Saturday was more than six inches better than her season-opening mark of 12-6.25 on Dec. 1.
Dunlap becomes the second Sooner in as many weeks to earn the award. Freshman Jason Stanley was named the male track and field athlete of the week for the week of January 7 after tying the OU school record in the 60-meter hurdles with the country's fourth fastest time, 7.88.
Kansas' Scott Russell, a weight thrower, and Missouri's Christian Cantwell, who competes in the shot put, shared the men's award as field athletes swept second week honors.
Dunlap and her Sooner teammates will host the OU Classic on Saturday at the Mosier Indoor Facility on the Norman campus. Action begins at 10 a.m.
