Sooners To Host Season-Opening Indoor Track & Field Meet

The University of Oklahoma Sooner track and field teams will host the annual All Comers Meet on Saturday, Dec. 1. The meet is the indoor season opener for OU and will be held at the Mosier Indoor Facility.
Field events will begin at 10 a.m. with the first race on the track set for 12:30 p.m. The men's mile relay is the final event scheduled and it is set for 6 p.m. The schedule, however, will be a rolling time schedule with events going off in a specific order rather than by set time.
A Good Field
A total of 14 schools will be participating in the opening meet of the NCAA season. Joining the host Sooners in the field are Barton, Baylor, Oklahoma Baptist, Oklahoma State (women only), Oral Roberts, Southern Methodist, Southern Nazarene, Tulsa, Arkansas (women only), North Texas, Dallas Baptist, Houston Tillotson and St. Gregory's.
For Division I teams, marks posted at this meet may be used toward qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championship to be held March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Last Year
Automatic qualifying marks were posted by Florence Ezeh of SMU in the weight throw with a 68-2.25 and Libor Charfreitag, also of SMU, with a 73-4.5 in the weight throw. NCAA provisional marks were posted by April Steiner of Arkansas in the pole vault (12-5) and Maria LeJour of Arkansas in the shot put (49-1.75).
For the host Sooners, NCAA provisional marks were posted by Staneshia Bell in the 60-meter dash (7.44) and Bambi Carson in the shot put (48-10.75). LaBoris Bean set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles and several other Sooners registered personal bests in the meet.
This Year's Team
The Sooners will be a building team during the 2001-02 indoor season but there is plenty of talent to build around. While OU lost Big 12 champions Janel Hayes (long jump) and Justin Conkling (heptathlon), junior Michael Westlund is back to defend his 2001 conference title in the pole vault. The Sooner women tied for sixth at the Big 12 Indoor in '01 while the men were eighth.
Other top returnees (and their Big 12 finish) include Leslie Dunlap, who finished third in the pole vault, Raoul Harvey, sixth in the 400, LaKisha Robinson, fourth in the 600-yard run, Aisha Stringer, seventh in the 800 meter, and Sand Swaby, third in the high jump.
Next Up
OU's combined event competitors will head to Manhattan, Kan., next Saturday for the KSU Pentathlon. The rest of the Sooner team will not compete again until January. The pole vaulters will head to Reno, Nev., for the USATF Summit on Jan. 11-12. The next weekend, the entire team returns to competition when the Sooners host the OU Classic.
