Track Squads Travel To Texas For Weekend Meets

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma track and field teams will head south for a pair of meets this weekend. On Friday, the Sooner pole vaulters will compete in the Texas-Arlington Open. On Saturday, they will join the rest of the Sooner team in Austin, Texas, for the Texas Invitational.

AT ARLINGTON - The Sooner vaulters will compete at 4 p.m. Friday at the UTA Open before heading to Austin to join up with the rest of the Sooner team.

AT AUSTIN - Men's teams scheduled to join OU and Texas at the Texas Invitational include Angelo State, Hutson-Tillotson, Southern Methodist, SW Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Kingsville, UT-San Antonion, Wisconsin and Auburn. Women's team joining the Sooners and Longhorns in the meet include Angelo State, Hutson-Tillotson, Illinois, UT-San Antonio, Southern Methodist, SW Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and Texas Lutheran. In addition, more than 100 invitational athletes will be in Austin. Field events begin at 11 a.m. and running events at 11:30 a.m.

LAST WEEK - It was a successful weekend for the Sooners, those who stayed in Norman for the Sooner Outdoor and those who went to Des Moines for the Drake Relays. OU came back from Drake with four titles. LaBoris Bean started the winning for the Sooners with a victory in 400-meter intermediate hurdles on Friday. His winning time was an NCAA provisional mark. On Saturday, OU added victories by Michael Blackwood in the men's special 400-meter dash, Jennifer Fontenot in the women's special 400-meter dash, and the women's 400-meter relay (Janel Hayes, LaToyia Hinds, Jimyria Hicks, Staneshia Bell). That squad posted an NCAA provisional mark as did Fontenot and Blackwood. Other NCAA provisional qualifiers included the men's 1600-meter relay (Raoul Harvey, Joey Scott, LaBoris Bean, Michael Blackwood) and the women's 1600-meter relay (Staneshia Bell, Alicia Emanuel, LaKisha Robinson, Jennifer Fontenot). That foursome had previously met the provisional mark in the mile but dropped that time by more than 6 seconds. The women's 3200-meter relay team finished fifth with the fifth-best time in school history and Staneshia Bell finished fourth in the 100-meter dash. Meanwhile, at the Sooner Outdoor, Bambi Carson won the shot and finished second in the discus, Dana Hillsman won the triple jump and Kyle Bookout won the discus.

NCAA UPDATE - OU added two new NCAA provisional qualifying marks at Drake Relays bringing the total of Sooners who have beaten provisional standards to five individuals and three relays. The men's 1600-meter relay mile relay (Raoul Harvey, Joey Scott, LaBoris Bean and Michael Blackwood) finished with a 3:05.72 to beat the NCAA provisional mark. In addition, Bean beat the NCAA provisional mark in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with his winning time of 51.07. Other Sooners who have met the NCAA provisional mark include Michael Westlund -- pole vault, the women's 400-meter relay (Janel Hayes, LaToyia Hinds, Jimyria Hicks, Staneshia Bell), Michael Blackwood - 400,- Jennifer Fontenot -- 400, and Bambi Carson, shot put. Blackwood, Fontenot and Carson met the provisional mark at LSU and have improved those marks since then. Westlund and the women's 400-meter relay met the provisional mark at the John Jacobs Invitational. The women's mile relay first beat the provisional mark at the Michael Johnson/SW Bell Classic before registering a better time in the 1600-meter relay.

NATIONAL RANKINGS - Following are OU's rankings in the NCAA Performance List which was released on May 1: Jennifer Fontenot, 400, 15th, women's 400-meter relay, 11th, women's 1,600-meter relay, 16th, Bambi Carson, 27th, shot put, Michael Blackwood, fourth, 400-meter dash, LaBoris Bean, 21st, 400-meter intermediate hurdles, men's 1600-meter relay, sixth, Michael Westlund, 20th, pole vault.

NEXT UP -- The Sooners will head to Abilene, Texas, for the Abilene Christian Invitational on Saturday, May 13.
