OU Track And Field Names MVPs

NORMAN, Okla. - Five Sooner student-athletes were named most valuable performers for the University of Oklahoma track and field program at the annual end of the year ceremony held recently. Cross country MVPs were Sarah Harvey, a senior from Ardmore, and Jimmy Martinez, a sophomore from Moore. Track MVPs were Jennifer Fontentot, a senior from Bartlesville, Michael Jackson, a senior from Idabel, and Michael Blackwood, a senior from Clarendon, Jamaica.

Harvey led the Sooners throughout the season. She was the top OU finisher at the Arkansas Chile Pepper and the Big 12 Conference Championship. She was the second-best finisher at four other meets including the NCAA District V Championship. Martinez ran in six of OU's seven meets and was OU's best finisher in every meet he competed in, including a season-best fifth-place finish at the Bob Timmons Invitational.

Fontentot qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship in the 400-meter dash, finished fourth in the Big 12 Indoor Championship in the 400, finished fifth in the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in the 400, and will be participating in the NCAA Outdoor Championship next week in Durham, N.C. Jackson came back from a back injury and was a member of the Sooner football team last fall. He posted a seventh-place finish in the Big 12 Indoor in the 400-meter dash, second-place finishes in the Big 12 and NCAA Indoor as a member of the 1,600-meter relay, was on the second-place finishing 1600-meter relay at the Big 12 Outdoor meet and was on the third-place 400-meter relay at the conference meet. Blackwood, who won the Big 12 Outdoor title in the 400-meter dash on Sunday with the fastest time in the world to date, finished second in the 600-yard run at the Big 12 Indoor and was the anchor leg of the second-place finishing 1600-meter relay at the Big 12 Indoor, NCAA Indoor and Big 12 Outdoor. Blackwood qualified for the NCAA Indoor in the 400-meter dash and has the fastest time on the NCAA performance list in the 400-meter dash for next weeks NCAA Championship. He and Jackson earned All-America honors in March in the indoor 1600-meter relay and will be participating in the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Durham, N.C., next week.
