Track Squads Travel To Columbia For Big 12 Outdoor Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma track and field athletes begin the final phase of the 2000 competitive season this weekend when they participate in the Big XII Outdoor Championships. The meet, hosted by the University of Missouri in Columbia, will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday with five field event finals and the first events of the heptathlon and decathlon scheduled for the first day. Action resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Audrey J. Walton Track-Soccer Stadium. Events on Saturday include the final events of the decathlon and heptathlon, preliminary heats in 14 running and finals in six more field events. The final day of action begin at 10 a.m. and will feature 29 finals, eight field event and 21 on the track. The final event is the men's 1,600-meter relay which is scheduled for 6 p.m.four running event finals scheduled for the first day. All Big 12 schools will be represented at this weekend's meet.
NATIONAL RANKINGS - The conference meet looks like a Who's Who of collegiate track and field with three men's teams ranked nationally by Trackwire and four women's teams in the top 25. Those teams include Texas (tied for seventh), Texas A&M (11th) and Baylor (13th) for the men and Texas (first), Nebraska (seventh), Colorado (11th) and Kansas State (14th) for the women. The Sooner men, ranked 25th last week, dropped out of the rankings this week.
PAST CHAMPIONSHIPS - The University of Texas has won all the Big 12 Outdoor titles since the first meet was held in 1997. The UT men made 1999 a clean sweep for Texas, taking the men's title. Nebraska won the men's title in 1997 and 1998. OU's best finish on the men's side was fourth in 1997 and 1998 and the women's best finish was seventh last year. The Sooner women finished fifth in the 2000 Big 12 Indoor and the men were 10th. Staneshia Bell won the 60-meter dash and was OU's only indoor champion. OU crowned one Big 12 champion in the 1999 Outdoor meet as Shomari Wilson won the 200-meter dash title in his final conference meet as a Sooner senior.
LAST WEEK - Only the pole vaulters competed last weekend for OU but for one, Michael McNamara, it was a record-setting competition. McNamara cleared a career-best 18-4.5 to win the pole vault title at the Abilene Christian Classic. The vault broke the NCAA automatic qualifying mark and made McNamara the first Sooner to automatically qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships to be held May 31-June 3 in Durham, N.C.
That vault is the best to-date in the Big 12 and third best in the country as of ranking lists done May 16. It marks McNamara's season best by more than 14 inches and is the second-best vault in Sooner history.
Teammate Michael Westlund cleared 17-9, a season and career best, to beat the NCAA provisional mark and finish fourth in the over-16 foot vaulting competition. In the under-16 feet class, Brett Corlett cleared a career-best 16-2 to finish fourth and Hal Conover was fifth with a vault of 16-2.
Lindsay Harris led the Sooner women vaulters. She cleared 10-11.75 to finish fifth. Jennifer Dobbs finished seventh with a career-best vault of 10-0.
NCAA UPDATE - Michael McNamara is OU's only automatic qualifier. The Sooners have five individuals and three relays who have beaten provisional standards. They include the men's 1600-meter relay mile relay (Raoul Harvey, Joey Scott, LaBoris Bean and Michael Blackwood), the women's 400-meter relay (Janel Hayes, LaToyia Hinds, Jimyria Hicks, Staneshia Bell), the women's 1,600-meter relay (Staneshia Bell, Alicia Emanuel, LaKisha Robinson, Jennifer Fontenot), LaBoris Bean -- 400-meter intermediate hurdles, Michael Westlund -- pole vault, Michael Blackwood - 400,- Jennifer Fontenot -- 400, and Bambi Carson, shot put.

THE CONFERENCE RANKINGS - In the conference ranking list before the championship, OU has a number of athletes ranked among the top 10. They include Staneshia Bell, ninth in the 100-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash, Jennifer Fontenot, fifth in the 400-meter dash, Alesha Peel, seventh in the 100-meter hurdles, women's 400-meter relay, second, women's 1,600-meter relay, fourth, Lindsay Harris, fifth in the pole vault, Janel Hayes, 10th in the long jump, Dana Hillsman, fifth in the triple jump, Bambi Carson, third in the shot put and discus, Jessica Longfors, fifth in the shot put and eighth in the discus, Katie Webster, sixth in the javelin, L'eron George, eighth in the 100-meter dash, Michael Blackwood, second in the 400, Raoul Harvey, sixth in the 400, Jonas Lusk, eighth in the 110-meter hurdles, LaBoris Bean, fourth in the 400-meter hurdles, Joey Scott, ninth in the 400-meter hurdles, men's 400-meter relay, fifth, 1,600-meter relay, third, Micahel McNamara, first in the pole vault, Michael Westlund, third in the pole vault, Chris Westfield, ninth in the pole vault, Joe Butler, 10th in the high jump, and Kyle Bookout, sixth in the discus.
ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12 - The Sooners were well represented on the Academic All-Big 12 lists released earlier this week. First-team honorees had at least a 3.20 grade point average and participated in at least 60 percent of OU's scheduled competitions. Second-team honorees had a 3.00-3.19 GPA and also met the participation standard. DeKock earned special recognition for carrying a 4.0 grade point average. True freshmen and first-year transfers were not eligible.
NEXT UP --The Sooners who qualify will head to the NCAA Outdoor Championships May 31-June 3 in Durham, N.C. This weekend marks the final days an athlete can qualify for the NCAA and the field will be announced early next week.
