Track And Field Squads Impressive At Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas - Bambi Carson finished fifth in the shot put and Sooner pole vaulters finished fifth and sixth on the final day of the 73rd annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

Michael McNamara cleared 17-2.75 on his first attempt to finish fifth. Teammate Michael Westlund cleared the opening height of 16-8.75 on his first attempt, then missed on three attempts at the next height. He got sixth place with fewer misses.

Carson got her best throw, 46-11.75, on her second attempt, then fouled on the next four tries to take fifth.

OU's women's 800-meter relay, made up of Alesha Peel, Jimyria Hicks, Jennifer Fontentot and Staneshia Bell finished sixth with a 1:37.98. The Sooner men's 1600-meter relay, Raoul Harvery, Michael Jackson, LaBoris Bean and Michael Blackwood, ran a 3:08.54 and fifnished fifth. The men's 6000-meter relay finished 16th win a 16:50.82 and Jonas Lusk, who qualified in the eighth spot in the 110-meter hurdles, did not start his race.

A team of former Sooners, Omar Brown, Roxbert Martin, Jason Rouser and Danny McFarlane, ran in the invitational 1600-meter relay event and finishd second with a time of 3:04.81. Of the four, Martin and Rouser are former Olympians (Martin for Jamaica and Rouser for the U.S.) and McFarlane and Brown are former World Championship competitors for Jamaica.

The Sooners will be back in action Saturday when they host the annual John Jacobs Invitational. The high school portion of the meet will be held on Friday with the collegiate events scheduled for Saturday.
