Track Squads Split Up For Weekend Action

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams will split up this weekend with a number of athletes heading to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Relays Thursday through Saturday while the remainder will participate in the UCO Relays on Friday. The decathlon for the UCO meet began today and will conclude on Thursday, For the Sooners, Shane Benton is compting in the decathlon.

IN AUSTIN : Competitors in Austin on Thursday include Mindy Mizell, 3000 meter, Angie Prescott, Aisha Stringer, Kelli O'Rourke and Alaina Dearman, 3200-meter relay, Sande Swaby, 400 hurdles, and LaBoris Bean, Jonas Lusk and Joey Scott, 400 hurdles. On Friday, the Sooners in competition will include Janel Hayes, LaToyia Hinds, Jimyria Hicks, and Staneshia Bell, 400-meter relay, Alesha Peel and Sande Swaby, 100-meter hurdles, Jonas Lusk and Joey Scott, 100-meter hurdles, Alicia Emanuel, LaKisha Robinson, Aisha Stringer and Jennifer Fontenot, 1600-meter relay, Shayla Austin and Janel Hayes, long jump, Lindsay Harris, pole vault, and Jessica Longfors and Megan Crystal, shot put and discus, Kyle Bookout, shot put, Bambi Carson, discus, and Kyle Bookout, discus. On Saturday, OU's entires include Jimyria Hicks, Staneshia Bell, Jennifer Fontenot and Aisha Stringer in the sprint medley relay, Michael Jackson, Ernest Lewis, Michael Blackwood, and Moses Washington in the sprint medley, Mike McNamara and Michael Westlund, pole vault, Bambi Carson, shot put, Alesha Peel, Jimyria Hicks, Jennifer Fontenot and Staneshia Bell, 800-meter relay, Brandon Kissack, Sam Stalcup, Jeremiah Smith and Jimmy Martinez, 6000-meter relay, and Raoul Harvey, Michael Jackson, LaBoris Bean and Michael Blackwood, 1600-meter relay.

IN EDMOND : Shane Benton opened the competition for the Sooners at the UCO Invitational, participating in the decathlon which started today and will end on Thursday. Field events will begin at 10 a.m. Friday and the Sooners will have entries in eight of the field events. Events on the track begin at 12:30 p.m. and OU will have competitors in 12 of the events. The final event of the meet is scheduled at 6:05 p.m. but the Sooners' last entry will compete at 5:30 p.m.

LAST WEEK : For the second week in a row, sprinter Staneshia Bell won the 100- and 200-meter dashes to lead the OU women's team to a second-place finish in the four-team UTEP Springtime Invitational. BYU took the men's and women's titles while OU finished second in both. Other Sooner winners included Bambi Carson who won the discus with a throw of 154-11, Michael McNamara, who cleared 16-6.75 in the pole vault, Alesha Peel with a 14.30 in the 100-meter high hurdles, Jonas Lusk with a 14.96 in the 110-meter high hurdles, Raoul Harvey with a 47.18 in the 400-meter dash, Michael Blackwood with a 1:52.1 in the 800-meter run, the Sooner men's 400-meter relay (made up of LaBoris Bean, Michael Jackson, Jonas Lusk and Joey Scott) with a 41.43

UPDATE : Three Sooners met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks in the season-opening meet. Jennifer Fontenot, Michael Blackwood and Bambi Carson posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Fontentot and Blackwood are coming off trips to the NCAA Indoor Championship while Carson also beat the provisional mark for the indoor meet. Fontentot won the 400-meter dash at LSU with a time of 53.45. Blackwood finished second with a 45.86. Carson won the shot put with a 49-5.75.

NEXT UP -- The Sooners will host their first outdoor meet of the season, the annual John Jacobs Invitational. The high school portion of the meet will be on Friday, April 14, with the university division will begin competition on Saturday. The first event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex.
