Sooner Track Squads Host John Jacobs Saturday

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma track and field teams will host the first of two outdoor track meet Saturday, April 15. Field events will begin at 9 a.m. while running events will start at 9:30 a.m. with prelims and slower sections of the 400- and 800-meter events. Finals will begin at 1:30 p.m. All action will take place at the John Jacobs Track and Field.

THE FIELD - Teams joining the Sooners in competition include Oklahoma Baptist, Central Oklahoma, Oral Roberts, Tulsa, Southern Nazarene, Oklahoma Christian, North Texas, Texas-Arlington, Baylor, Western Colorado, Manhattan College and Barton County CC.

LAST WEEK - The Sooners split up last weekend with those who qualified traveling to Austin for the Texas Relays. The remainder of the team participated in the UCO Invitational on Friday. At Texas, the women's 3200-meter relay, made up of Angie Prescott, Aisha Stringer, Kelli O'Rourke and Alaina Dearman, finished fifth in the 3200-meter relay, the women's sprint medley relay, made up of Jimyria Hicks, Staneshia Bell, Jennifer Fontenot and Aisha Stringer, finished second, the men's sprint medley relay team, made up of LaBoris Bean, Michael Blackwood, Raoul Harvey and Moses Washington, finished fourth, Bambi Carson finished fourth in the discus, Jessica Longfors was fifth in the shot put, Carson finished fifth in the Division A shot put, Michael McNamara was fifth in the pole vault, Michael Westlund was sixth in the pole vault, the women's 800-meter relay, made up of Alesha Peel, Hicks, Fontentot and Bell, was sixth, and the men's 1600-meter relay, Harvey, Bean, Washington and Blackwood, finished fifth.

Meanwhile,at UCO, Dana Hillsman won the long jump. Other winners included Sinead Holt in the 1,500-meter run, Sarah Harvey in the 5,000-meter run, Brett Corlett in the pole vault, Josh Howk in the shot put, and Cecil Rose in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

UPDATE - Three Sooners met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks in the season-opening meet. Jennifer Fontenot, Michael Blackwood and Bambi Carson posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Fontentot, who qualified for the NCAA Indoor, won the 400-meter dash at LSU with a time of 53.45. Blackwood, another NCAA Indoor qualifier, finished second in the 400 with a 45.86. Carson, who beat the NCAA Indoor provisional mark for the indoor meet but was not added to the field, won the shot put at LSU with a 49-5.75.

NEXT UP -- The Sooners will split up once again next weekend. Two Sooners will head to the Kansas Relays to participate in the combined events. Others will go to a meet at Arkansas while still others will head to Baylor.
