NORMAN, Okla. - Seven University of Oklahoma athletes will be traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend for the NCAA Indoor Track Championships. Competition will take place at the Randall Tyson Track Complex. The Sooners competed at the Tyson Complex Feb. 11-12.
The Sooners' 1600-meter relay takes the second-best time in the country into the championship. The quartet of LaBoris Bean, Michael Jackson, Raoul Harvey and Michael Blackwood posted a time of 3:04.99 to finish second in the Big 12 Championship. Ernest Lewis will travel as the alternate.
When the time is converted to account for the oversized track at Iowa State, the Sooners' qualifying time is 3:06.59, less than 0.6 seconds behind the top time in the country, posted by Baylor, also in the Big 12 meet. The next fastest time, posted by Texas A&M, is nearly two seconds behind OU. Four of the 12 1600-meter relay teams are from the Big 12 Conference.
Blackwood, a senior, will also compete in the 400-meter dash. His time of 46.48 is the fourth-best time heading into the meet. He posted that time last Saturday at the OU Qualifiers Meet. Blackwood finished second in the 600-yard run at the Big 12 and did not compete in the 400. Both the relay and Blackwood posted automatic qualifying times.
Other qualifiers for the Sooners were Jennifer Fontenot in the women's 400, Michael Westlund in the pole vault and Michael McNamara, also in the pole vault. The three were invited based on their beating the NCAA provisional standard. Fontenot's seed time of 53.97, posted in the Big 12 Championship, ranks 13th going into the meet. Fontenot finished fourth in the Big 12 in the 400. Westlund is ranked 13th among the vaulters with a 17-7.25 while McNamara is ranked 15th with his season best of 17-7. Both marks are personal bests. McNamara finished second in the Big 12 in the pole vault while Westlund finished fifth.
OU's entries will begin competition at 5 p.m. Friday in the women's 400 preliminaries. The men's 400 prelims will follow at 5:15 p.m. The pole vault competition is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The final in the women's 400 is set for 6:45 p.m. Saturday followed by the men's 400. The men's 1600-meter relay is the final event of the meet and is scheduled for 8:10 p.m.
The first event is scheduled for noon on Friday and there will be six field event and eight running finals on Friday. Action resumes at 2 p.m. Saturday with six field event and 12 running finals.
