NORMAN -- It was all smiles Saturday when race organizers got the final numbers at the end of the Arts Classic VI as more than 3,000 people participated in the event.
Unlike a year ago, the weather cooperated and the final field was the largest in event history.
Jason Larabee was the overall winner in the men's half marathon with a time of 1:10:50. Jai Scott was the overal winner in the women's half marathon with a time of 1:30:22.
Rob Roddy was the first-place finisher in the 10K wheelchair event. Kevin Connolly won the men's 10K with a time of 32:38 while Barbara Luciano was the overall 10K with a time of 41:05.
Colin Cutler won the two-mile wheelchair event with a time of 19:40. John Sharp won the men's two mile with a time of 10:07 and Kim Bricker won the men's two mile with a time of 12:01.
Proceeds from the event benefit the University of Oklahoma College of Fine Arts and, for a second year, the OU Athletic Department.
"Once again, it proved to be a successful partnership between the College of Fine Arts and the Athletic Department," said Dudley Hyde, race organizer. "The weather was phenomenal, the people came out in huge numbers and it was just a great day all the way around."
"We had set 3,000 participants as our goal for this year and it's great to bypass the goal," Hyde added. Last year's event drew 2,347 participants.
"This is all about transforming the lives of students in our college and in the athletic department," said Marvin Lanb, dean of the College of Fine Arts. "With the turnout we had today, there will be a number of student who will benefit. Additionally, we will be able to add additional revenue to the Juli Busken Scholarship Fund. This truly is a win-win situation for all involved. It was just an enjoyable and successful day all the way around."
Race organizers announced there were 2,620 runners/walkers, 311 bicyclists, 27 in-line skaters (whose two-mile and 10K events were new this year), 53 volksmarchers and three wheelchair entries. It was just the second year for the cyclists who chose between a 7-mile fun tour, a 30-mile tour and a 43-mile tour.
The youngest runner in the two-mile event was six-year-old Samantha Rosales who covered the two miles in 22:37. The oldest competitors were 79-year-old Betty Windsor and Fisher Lewis.
The youngest competitor in the 10K was 10-year-old Jack Morrow and the oldest ws 78-year-old Jim Seikel.
