COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Sand Swaby finished ninth in the heptathlon gold and Lindsay Cobbs finished seventh in the heptathlon bronze as OU opened the outdoor track season at the College Station Multis. Another Sooner who was competing unattached, Justin Conkling, finished first in the decathlon silver event. Conkling, who will be a fifth-year senior next year, is redshirting this year to concentrate on his training.
Swaby, a sophomore, scored 4,614 points in the two-day competition. Her best events in the meet were the 100 low hurdles, the high jump, and the 200-meter dash. Her point totals in those three events made up 2,571 of her total points. She recorded PRs in in 100-meter low hurdles with a 14.49, in the shot put with a 33-2, in the 200 with a 25.48 and in the 800 with a 2:44.99. Swaby was in fifth place after the first day of competition with 3,108 points.
Cobbs, a freshman, finished with 4,273 points. She scored the majority of her points in the 100-meter low hurdles with a 15.58, in the 200-meter dash with a 26.38 and the 800-meter run with a 2:30.72. In those three events, she scored 2,215 of her 2,659 points. Cobbs was in third place after the first day of competition with 2,659 points. All of her marks are collegiate PRs.
Conkling continued his tremendous improvement during his redshirt year. He set PRs in seven of the 10 events of the decathlon. He was in second place with 3742 points after the first day of competition.
The full Sooner track and field squads will open the outdoor season next Saturday at the U.S. Track and Field Series in Baton Rouge, La. Joining OU and host LSU in the field will be TCU and Texas A&M.
