FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Seniors Jennifer Fontenot and Michael Blackwood were the only Sooners to compete today during the first day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Fontentot ran in the final heat of the women's 400 and finished with a 53.90. While the time was one of the best in her career, she finished 14th and did not advance to the eight-person final. Mikele Barber of South Carolina led all qualifiers with a 52.32. Fontenot was seeded 14th in the event.
Blackwood, assigned to lane 5, got boxed in when the runners broke to a single lane and finished last in the first heat with a 46.69. Brandon Couts of Baylor led all qualifiers with a 45.60. Blackwood finished 12th, just .22 seconds behind the final qualifier. Blackwood was ranked fourth heading into thecompetition.
Blackwood will compete again Saturday as the anchor leg of OU's 1600-meter relay team. Joining him on the relay will be Raoul Harvey, Michael Jackson and LaBoris Bean. Additionally, the Sooners will send vaulters Michael McNamara and Michael Westlund into competition.
