AMES, Iowa -- Junior Staneshia Bell ran 7.40 to edge Lakeesha White of Texas to win OU's first Big 12 Indoor individual title in the sixth annual meet. Bell's 60-meter dash time beat the NCAA provisional standard and led the way as the Sooner women were in fifth place with three finals to go.
The Sooner men were in 10th but still had possible points coming from pole vault finals and the 1600-meter final as five events were still competing.
The Texas and Nebraska women were battling it out for first place with UT leading 125-122 with high jump, 3,000-meter run and the 1600-meter relay remaining. On the men's side, it was Nebraska with a 79-74 lead with pole vault, triple jump, shot put, 3,000-meter run and 1600-meter relay remaining.
Bell also scored points for the Sooners with her fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Senior Jennifer Fontenot scored with a fourth-place finish in the 400 and LaKisha Robinson finished eighth in the 600-yard run. Aisha Stringer was sixth in the 800-meter run and the women's distance relay scored a point late Friday with an eighth-place finish. OU's field event performances were highlighted by Janel Hayes' second-place finish in the long jump in a NCAA provisional qualifying 20-01.75 leap. Other Sooners who picked up field event points included Lindsey Harris, who finished fourth in the pole vault, Bambi Carson, third in the shot put, and Jessica Longfors, fourth in the shot put.
The Sooner men had a second-place finish from Michael Blackwood in the 600-yard run. OU also got points from L'eron George's seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash, sixth- and seventh-place finishes from Raoul Harvey and Michael Jackson in the 400-meter dash, a fifth-place finish by Moses Washington in the 800-meter run, and sixth- and seventh-place finishes from Joey Scott and Jonas Lusk, respectively, in the 60-meter dash. In a show of the strength of this conference, seven of the top eight times in the men's 400-meter dash were either NCAA automatic or provisional marks.
