AMES, Iowa -- Janel Hayes improved her season best by nearly a foot to lead the Sooners in the first day of the Big 12 Indoor Track Championships. Hayes' season best in the long jump was good for second place and eight points. Her jump of 20-1.75 beat the NCAA provisional standard.
Lindsey Harris finished fourth in the pole vault with a leap of 12-1.50 to produce five points. Her vault beat the NCAA provisional standard but she has a better mark from earlier this season. OU also got a point from the eighth-place finish of the women's distance medley relay. Corrie Hussar, Alicia Emanuel, Alaina Dearman and Stephanie Webb combined for a 12:13.66, a season-best mark for OU.
Those performances gave OU 14 points and a seventh-place standing after one day of competition.
After the first day of competition, Nebraska leads the women's race with 61 points and Missouri leads the men's standings with 29 points. The Sooner men, whose stronger events come on Saturday, did not score any points on the first day, a day that featured just nine finals, five field event and four on the track.
The Sooner women advanced eight athletes to Saturday's finals including three in the 60-meter dash, including Staneshia Bell, LaToyia Hinds and Hayes. Hinds and Hayes both ran season best times in the event. Bell also qualified in the 200-meter dash. Jennifer Fontenot dropped her season best in the 400 with a 53.96, a time that will improve her standing in the NCAA provisional rankings. LaKisha Robinson qualified in the 600-yard dash, Aisha Stringer qualified in the 800-meter run and Alesha Peel qualified in the 60-meter dash. For Stringer, her qualifying time was more than four seconds faster than her previous season best.
