NORMAN, Okla. - Sooner track and field athletes begin the final phase of the 2000 indoor season this weekend when they participate in the Big XII Indoor Championships. The meet, hosted by Iowa State University in Ames, will begin at noon on Friday with five field event finals and four running event finals scheduled for the first day. Action resumes at noon on Saturday and will conclude with the men's 1600-meter relay at 4:55 p.m. All Big XII schools will be represented at this weekend's meet.
NATIONAL RANKINGS - The conference meet looks like a Who's Who of collegiate track and field with five men's teams ranked nationally by Trackwire and four women's teams in the top 25. Those teams include Texas (sixth), Baylor (11th), Nebraska (15th), Missouri (18th) and Iowa State (21st) for the men and Texas (third), Nebraska (fifth), Kansas State (ninth), and Texas Tech (25th) for the women. The Sooner men dropped out of the rankings for the first time this season this week.
LAST WEEK - Oklahoma was part of a record-setting meet at their own Sooner Indoor. One NCAA automatic mark and 24 NCAA provisional marks were set as athletes tuned up for conference action. Six facility records also were broken. For OU, three school records were changed. Staneshia Bell broke her own mark in the 60-meter dash with a 7.41. Alesha Peel broke her own record in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.32. Jonas Lusk broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a 7.97. Those three marks were all personal bests and 18 other Sooners set personal bests in action on Saturday.
NCAA UPDATE - Bambi Carson (shot put - 49-8.25), Staneshia Bell (60-meter dash - 7.41), and Mike Westlund (pole vault - 17-7.25) joined the list of NCAA provisional qualifiers for the Sooners. They join Lindsey Harris (pole vault - 12-2.50), Jennifer Fontenot (400- 54.85), Alesha Peel (60-meter hurdles - 8.32), Michael Blackwood (400-46.74) and the men's mile relay (3:12.08). In this week's NCAA performance ranking, Carson is 27th, Bell is 21st, Peel is 15th, Fontenot is 27th, Harris 27th, Westlund is 12th and Blackwood is 11th. The men's mile relay is ranked 10th.
THE CONFERENCE RANKINGS - In the conference ranking list before the championship, OU has a number of athletes ranked among the top 10. They include Jonas Lusk, ninth in the 60-meter hurdles, L'eron George, second in the 200, Michael Blackwood, Raoul Harvey, Michael Jackson, and LaBoris Bean, second, third, fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 400, Blackwood, Bean, Harvey, and Moses Washington, first, seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 600, Washington, fourth in the 800, 1600-meter relay, fourth/mile relay, second, Mike Westlund, Mike McNamara and Chris Westfield, fourth, seventh and 10th, respectively, in the pole vault, Staneshia Bell and LaToyia Hinds, second and ninth, respectively, in the 60-meter dash, Alesha Peel and Andrea Bell, third and 10th, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles, Bell and Jimyria Hicks, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash, Jennifer Fontentot, seventh in the 400, LaKisha Robinson and Andrea Bell, fifth and ninth, respectively, in the 600, 1600-meter relay, fourth/mile relay, second, Sand Swaby, ninth, high jump, Janel Hayes and Hinds, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump, Dana Hillsman, ninth in the triple jump, Lindsey Harris, fifth in the pole vault, Bambi Carson and Jessica Longfors, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the shot put, and Katie Webster, 10th in the weight throw.
AMONG THE BEST - Several Sooners are ranked among the best in America and the world in the 1999 Performance List released by Track and Field News in its March 2000 issue. Times were recorded during the calendar year of 1999. The men's sprint medley team's time of 3:16.85 was the best of any collegiate team last year and ranked second in the world. The men's 1600-meter relay team was the fourth-best collegiate squad while the women's 400-meter relay was ranked 24th. Michael Blackwood (46.74) was ranked 33rd on the world list with his time of 45.33 and Moses Washington was the 10th-ranked collegian on the list in the 800 with a time of 1:47.93.
NEXT UP -The Sooners will host a Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday, March 4. The Sooner meet is one of 14 Last Chance meets March 2-4 and is one of five scheduled for Saturday.
