Track And Field Hosts Sooner Indoor Saturday

NORMAN, Okla. - After three weeks on the road, the University of Oklahoma track and field teams will host the Sooner Indoor on Saturday at the Mosier Indoor Facility. The first field events, the weight throw and long jump, will start at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the pole vault, shot put and triple jump. The first event on the track will be prelims in the 60-meter hurdles. Timed finals will begin at 2 p.m. with the final event, the women's mile relay scheduled for 4:50 p.m.
THIS WEEK'S MEET
The meet features the men's and women's teams of Oral Roberts, Tulsa, Barton County, Baylor, North Texas and host OU. The women's team from the University of Texas also will compete as will select individuals from Central Florida's women's team.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Sooner men were ranked 19th in the latest top 25 poll issued by Trackwire (Feb. 15). Other ranked teams competing on Saturday include the Texas women, ranked second, and the Baylor men, ranked 11th
LAST WEEK
The Sooner women used the fast track and the competitive field in the Golden Spike Invitational last Saturday to post their fastest time of the season in the 1600-meter relay. The quartet of Staneshia Bell, Jimyria Hicks, Alicia Emanuel and Jennifer Fontenot ran a 3:45.25. That time was better than the previous best by more than three seconds and missed the provisional qualifying time by less than four seconds. Junior Joey Scott, who finished fifth on Friday with a school-record time of 8.02 in the 60-meter hurdles, finished eighth in Saturday's invitational hurdle event with an 8.17. The men's 1600-meter relay also competed but dropped the baton 40 meters from the finish and did not finish the event.
OU also competed in the Tyson Invitational on Friday, the collegiate portion of the inaugural event at the Randal Tyson Track Center at the University of Arkansas. OU's best performances on Friday came in the pole vault as Michael McNamara vaulted 16-02.75 and had fewer misses to win the pole vault and two other Sooners finished in the top five. Michael Westlund finished second with a vault of 16-02.75 and Chris Westfield also jumped 16-02.75 but had the most misses. For the women, Lindsey Harris vaulted 12-02.50 (3.72 meters) which beat the NCAA provisional mark in the pole vault. The mark gave Harris second place in the meet.
With a field that resembled a mini-NCAA meet, the win in the pole vault was OU's only first-place finish in the Friday action. OU's other top six finishes included: Staneshia Bell -- fourth in the 60 and sixth in the 200, Jessica Longfors, second in the shot put, Bambi Carson, third in the shot put, Megan Crystal, sixth in the shot put, Alesha Peel, fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, Sand Swaby, sixth in the high jump, LaToyia Hinds, fifth in the long jump, Janel Hayes, sixth in the long jump, Michael Blackwood, third in the 400, Michael Jackson, fifth in the 400, Kyle Bookout, sixth in the shot put and Brandon DeKock, fifth in the weight throw.
NCAA UPDATE
Lindsey Harris joined the OU list of provisional qualifiers with her vault of 12-2.50 at Arkansas, currently the 23rd-best mark in that event. She became fourth individual to join the list. Additionally, the men's mile relay has beaten the provisional mark. In the latest NCAA rankings (through meets of Feb. 15), Michael Blackwood (400-46.74) is eighth and the mile relay is ranked 20th (both beat the provisional mark on Feb. 5). Jennifer Fontenot, with her time of 54.85, is ranked 20th on the list. She met the provisional mark on Jan. 29. Alesha Peel, who beat the provisional mark in the 60-meter hurdles on Jan. 22, is ranked 25th with her time of 8.41.
AMONG THE BEST
Several Sooners are ranked among the best in America and the world in the 1999 Performance List released by Track and Field News in its March 2000 issue. Times were recorded during the calendar year of 1999. The men's sprint medley team's time of 3:16.85 was the best of any collegiate team last year and ranked second in the world. The men's 1600-meter relay team was the fourth-best collegiate squad while the women's 400-meter relay was ranked 24th. Michael Blackwood (46.74) was ranked 33rd on the world list with his time of 45.33 and Moses Washington was the 10th-ranked collegian on the list in the 800 with a time of 1:47.93.

The Sooners will travel to Ames, Iowa, for the 2000 Big XII Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday. A limited number of tickets remain and can be purchased by calling (888) 478-2925. Tickets for Friday only are $6 for adults and $4 for high school and under and Saturday tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for high school and under.
