Track And Field Travels To Tyson Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma track and field teams will head to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Tyson Invitational this weekend. The meet will serve as the inaugural event for the Randal Tyson Track Center, the host site of the 2000 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in March. The collegiate events will be held on Friday, starting at 1 p.m. Competition on Saturday is restricted to a select group of competitors. At this time, the Sooners know that the men's and women's 1600-meter relay teams will compete on Saturday. Other OU competitors could be added after the finals on Friday.
THIS WEEK'S MEET - The meet features the men's and women's teams of Houston, TCU, SMU, Stanford, UCLA, Georgetown, Clemson, Tulsa, host Arkansas and the Sooners. Additionally, the Texas women will compete. The meet will have the appearance of a mini-NCAA as six of the women's teams are ranked in Trackwire's top 25 and seven of the men's teams are ranked, including 17th-ranked Oklahoma. On the men's side, Arkansas is first, Stanford is second, Clemson fifth and Southern Methodist is sixth. Other squads that are nationally ranked in the men's poll include 11th-ranked TCU and UCLA which is 22nd. On the women's side, the Texas women are currently ranked second in the country followed by UCLA which is fourth, Arkansas, ranked fifth, Stanford, currently ranked ninth, 14th-ranked SMU, and Georgetown, ranked 18th,
LAST WEEK - The Sooner women used strong performances in the sprints and long jump to edge Colorado State 150-149 while the Sooner men had six first-place finishes to finish third in the Air Force Quadrangular. Staneisha Bell (60 and 200), Jennifer Fontenot (400), Alesha Peel (60 hurdles), Janel Hayes (long jump), L'eron George (200), Michael Blackwood (400), Moses Washington (800), Joey Scott (60 hurdles) and the men's mile relay (LaBoris Bean, Michael Jackson, Raoul Harvey and Blackwood) took first-place honors for OU.
NCAA UPDATE - Michael Blackwood (46.74) and the men's mile relay (3:11.55) joined OU's list of NCAA provisional qualifiers last weekend. In the latest NCAA rankings, Blackwood is seventh and the mile relay is ranked 10th. Jennifer Fontenot, with her time of 54.85, is ranked 15th on the list. She met the provisional mark on Jan. 29. Alesha Peel, who beat the provisional mark in the 60-meter hurdles on Jan. 22, is ranked 24th with her time of 8.41.
AMONG THE BEST - Several Sooners are ranked among the best in America and the world in the 1999 Performance List released by Track and Field News in its March 2000 issue. Times were recorded during the calendar year of 1999. The men's sprint medley team's time of 3:16.85 was the best of any collegiate team last year and ranked second in the world. The men's 1600-meter relay team was the fourth-best collegiate squad while the women's 400-meter relay was ranked 24th. Michael Blackwood (46.74) was ranked 33rd on the world list with his time of 45.33 and Moses Washington was the 10th-ranked collegian on the list in the 800 with a time of 1:47.93.
