LINCOLN, Neb. - Victories by Staneshia Bell, Jennifer Fontenot, Michael Blackwood and the men's 1600-meter relay highlighted the results for the OU men's and women's track and field teams in the dual meet with Nebraska on Saturday. Originally scheduled as a triangular, North Carolina was unable to attend due to the weather.
Bell won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.55 and Fontenot earned an NCAA provisional qualifying time with a 54.85 to win the 400-meter dash. Fontenot becomes the second Sooner in two weeks to meet an NCAA provisional standard. Alesha Peel, who finished second on Saturday in the Husker Dual, beat the provisional mark last Saturday in the 60-meter hurdles.
Blackwood ran a 47.74 to win his second 400-meter dash in as many weeks. The quartet of LaBoris Bean, Michael Jackson, Raoul Harvey and Ernest Lewis ran a 3:13.50 to win the relay by more than seven seconds.
OU senior Katie Webster improved her school record in the weight throw for the second consecutive week. She broke her own record last week with a throw of 50-8 1/4. She finished fourth at Nebraska with a career-best, school-record mark of 52-8.
Nebraska won 24 of the 28 events. Husker freshman Eric Eschbach tied for the nation's lead and broke a Nebraska school record with a pole vault of 18-0 1/4. Eight Huskers met NCAA provisional marks in the unscored dual meet.
While the Sooners won only four events, OU showed depth in nearly all of the events. The Sooner women took three of the top four places in the 60-meter dash, two of the top three in the 200, three of the top four in the 400, two of the top five in the 800, two of the top four in the mile, four of the top seven in the 3000, two of the top three in the 60-meter hurdles, two of the top five in the high jump, two of the top four in the pole vault, two of the top three in the long jump, four of the top six in the triple jump, and two of the top three in the shot put. The Sooner men had two of the top six finishers in the 60, two of the top six in the 200, first through third in the 400 (Blackwood, Raoul Harvey and Ernest Lewis), two of the top five in the 800, three of the top six in the mile, three of the top six in the 3000, two of the top four in the 60-meter hurdles, two of the top five in the high jump, and five of the top seven in the pole vault.
The Sooners will be on the road for two more weeks, traveling to meets in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Fayetteville, Ark., before returning to Norman to host the Sooner Indoor on Feb. 19.
