Sooners Travel to Lincoln for Triangular

NORMAN, Okla. - After a pair of competitions in Norman, the University of Oklahoma men's and women's track teams will travel to Lincoln, Neb., this weekend for a triangular meet. OU will be joined in the meet by North Carolina and host Nebraska. The Sooners are coming off a strong performance in the Oklahoma Track Classic last Saturday. OU had four event winners - Staneshia Bell in the 60-meter dash, Bambi Carson in the shot put, Joey Scott in the 60-meter hurdles and Michael Blackwood in the 400-meter dash. Sooner Alesha Peel met the NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.41 (provisional standard is 8.43). She became the first Sooner to beat an NCAA standard, provisional or automatic, this season. In addition, four Sooners set school indoor records on Saturday. Peel's mark in the 60-meter hurdles was a new mark as was Bell's in the 60-meter dash and Scott's in the 60-meter hurdles. Senior Katie Webster broke the school record in the weight throw with a toss of 50-8 1/4, nearly two feet better than the old mark. The meet will present a challenge for the Sooners as the Huskers have 11 NCAA automatic or provisional qualifiers and several athletes ranked among the best in the country. The Nebraska women were tied for eighth in the Trackwire poll released on Jan. 11 while the North Carolina women were tied for 18th in the same poll. While the Sooner women weren't ranked in the poll,the Sooner men were tied for 12th in the Jan. 11 poll. The triangular figures to showcase some battles in the hurdles, jumps and weight throws as all three teams have strengths in those areas. North Carolina is coming off a strong performance in its season opener, the Virginia Tech Invitational while Nebraska has hosted a triangular with Kansas and Tulsa and its own Nebraska Open last weekend. Action begins at 8:45 a.m. at the Bob Devaney Center with the final event scheduled for 3:45 p.m. The Sooners will be on the road for two more weeks, traveling to meets in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Fayetteville, Ark., before returning to Norman to host the Sooner Indoor on Feb. 19.
