Sooners Open 1999-2000 Indoor Season Saturday

NORMAN, Okla. - The 1999-2000 indoor track and field season opens Saturday for the Oklahoma Sooner track and field teams when OU hosts the All Comers Meet at the Mosier Indoor Facility. This opener will be packed with some of the top performers in the current and past collegiate scene. Joining OU in the meet are athletes from Baylor, Barton Community College, North Texas, Southern Methodist, Texas-Arlington, Oklahoma State, Central Oklahoma, Oral Roberts, Oklahoma Baptist, and Tulsa. Additionally, a number of former collegiate athletes will be competing on club teams or unattached.
The field events will begin at the Mosier Indoor Facility at 10:30 a.m. with running events scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Field events scheduled for the meet are weight throw, shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump and pole vault, In all field events, the women's competition will be held first followed by the men's competition in the same event. With the exception of the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles, all running events will be timed finals.
A highlight of the meet will be the open men's mile relay. In addition to teams from Baylor and Barton CC, the Sooners will put Raoul Harvey, Ernest Lewis, Moses Washington and Michael Blackwood in a foursome. Washington and Blackwood were All-Americans in 1999. The all-star relay will feature former Sooners Omar Brown, Roxbert Martin, Jason Rouser and Danny McFarlane. All were All-Americans while competing at OU and three of the four competed for the United States and Jamaica in the 1996 Olympic Games. Rouser returned with a gold medal from the U.S.'s winning relay team.
"This is a great way to open our season," said Jill Lancaster, co-head coach. "The talent level is high because we encourage unattached and club entries." According to co-head coach Rodney Price, the meet is just what the Sooners need. "We have had weeks of training and we are ready to compete. In a meet like this, you get an early test to see where you are and what we need to do to get better. When you compete against Olympians, you get a quick picture."
Performances at Saturday's meet can be used for NCAA qualifying. OU's next home meet will be Jan. 22 when the Sooners host the OU Classic.
