NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In a game that came down to the final shot, Oklahoma's six-game winning streak was halted as No. 17 Arkansas posted an 82-79 SEC Tournament quarterfinals victory Friday night at Bridgestone Arena.
OU, which led for more than half the game, trailed by two when Arkansas' Darius Acuff Jr. made one of two free throw attempts with 10 seconds remaining. The 11th-seeded Sooners rebounded the miss and had a chance to tie, but
Nijel Pack's 29-foot 3-point attempt hit the rim and bounded off as the third-seeded Razorbacks improved to 24-8 and OU fell to 19-15.
The SEC's best 3-point shooter, Pack scored a team-high 19 points but was held to two treys on five attempts.
Derrion Reid and
Tae Davis scored 17 apiece on combined 13-for-25 shooting for an Oklahoma team that has played its best basketball of the season over the last month.
Mohamed Wague registered 13 points and six rebounds and
Xzayvier Brown contributed four points, a team-high seven rebounds and a game-high eight assists.
But Acuff Jr., a freshman, was the story of the night. The SEC Player of the Year scored 37 points on 11-for-21 field goal, 5-for-8 3-point and 10-for-12 free throw shooting. The rest of his UA team was a combined 17 for 43 from the field and 3 for 12 from deep.
The game was nip and tuck for most of the first half and featured seven lead changes and four ties. A driving layup and three free throws from Pack gave OU its biggest lead of the night at 35-27 with 3:37 left in the half. Brown hit a fadeaway in the lane for a 39-34 lead with 6.1 seconds to go but Acuff Jr. beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer that cut OU's margin to 39-37 at the break.
Arkansas took a couple of one-point leads early in the second half, only for Reid to answer both times. The sophomore scored six straight points for OU for a 48-44 lead with 15:26 remaining.
The Razorbacks responded with a 10-2 run for a 54-50 advantage and seemed poised to take control. But a
Dayton Forsythe free throw, Reid shot in the lane and a Wague layin put the Sooners back up by one with 10:59 left.
OU grew its lead to 61-57 on Pack's second 3-pointer before Arkansas knotted the score with 9:00 to go. Neither team led by more than two points until the Razorbacks scored six straight points for a 73-67 lead with 3:48 to go. They extended their lead to seven points just over a minute later.
Davis hit a key 3 with 1:33 left and made two free throws with 53.8 on the clock to trim Arkansas' advantage to 77-75.
Acuff Jr.'s contested baseline 19-footer at the end of the shot clock put UA up by four with 27.5 left, but Brown answered with a quick lay in. Two more Arkansas free throws made it 81-77 with 18.1 seconds to go and OU responded with another quick basket by Davis with 11.2 seconds remaining before fouling Acuff with 10.0 on the clock. He made the first and missed the second, setting the stage for Pack's game-tying attempt.
OU entered the game averaging 9.9 3-point makes per game on the season, just shy of the single-season school record of 10.3 treys per outing by the 2015-16 squad. But the Sooners hit just four 3-pointers on 16 attempts and were outscored by 12 from behind the arc (Arkansas was 8 for 21).
Oklahoma held a 22-14 rebounding advantage in the first half but was outboarded 23-14 in the second half. Similarly, OU posted a 10-5 advantage in second-chance points in the opening 20 minutes but was outscored 14-6 in the category after halftime.
Pack averaged a team-high 21.0 points over OU's three tournament games, going 11 for 25 (44%) from 3-point range. Reid averaged 17.3 points and 6.7 rebounds and Davis averaged 16.3 points and 4.3 boards per contest. Both forwards shot 60% from the field.
The Sooners now await their NCAA Tournament fate. The tournament selection show is scheduled for Sunday at 5 p.m. CT.
