NORMAN – The No. 18 Oklahoma men's tennis team came up short in its first SEC match of the season, falling 3-4 to South Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
After losing the doubles point, OU's singles lineup was resilient and put three points on the board against the No. 34 Gamecocks. Oklahoma's wins came at the two, four and five singles positions.
All three doubles courts were tightly matched, with the one pair only falling 4-6, the two pair coming up short 5-7 and the unfinished court abandoned with a 6-5 score.
Oklahoma struck first in singles with two statement wins. No. 89 Asahi Harazaki landed a tying win at the five line, 6-2, 6-3, just before sophomore Orel Kimhi gave the Sooners the lead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the four spot. Kimchi missed Oklahoma's last five matches as he competed with Israel in the Davis Cup.
The Gamecocks tied the match back up when freshman Johan Rodriguez fell, 5-7, 4-6, at the three spot. The loss is only Rodriguez's second of the season.
No. 79 Oscar Lacides and No. 49 Luis Alvarez battled on courts one and two against South Carolina's No. 44 Lucas Da Silva and No. 51 Sean Daryabeigi. Lacides dropped the first set but battled back to win the second set in a tiebreak. Just across the way, Alvarez dropped his first set in a tiebreak but played with dominance in set two.
Junior Hank Trondson chipped away at the competition at the six line. He won the first set tiebreaker but lost the second set and played a third set along with his teammates at the one and two spots.
The third-set Sooners kept competition tight. Alvarez won 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-0 at the two line and Lacides dropped his match, 4-6, 7-6(6), 3-6, on court one. The final match in play was on court six where Trondston battled with USC's Charlie Swaine. The OU junior kept the match close but ultimately gave up the point, 7-6(1), 4-6, 4-6.
The Sooners take on Ole Miss on Monday, Feb. 23, at noon at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
