COLUMBIA, S.C. — Oklahoma shot just 19% from 3-point range and was outscored 18-11 off turnovers in an 85-76 loss at South Carolina on Tuesday night. The defeat for the Sooners, who never led, was their fifth straight.
OU junior guard
Xzayvier Brown scored a game-high 22 points, his seventh outing of at least 20 in the last 10 contests, and senior forward
Tae Davis netted a season-high 20. Brown also logged six rebounds, three assists, a career-high three blocked shots and two steals, while Davis added three boards and three handouts.
Sophomore forward
Derrion Reid scored 11 points on 6-for-10 shooting and pulled down a game-high-tying seven rebounds.
The Sooners (11-8, 1-5 SEC) struggled from behind the arc for the second straight game. After going 6 for 24 (25%) in a two-point loss to No. 18 Alabama on Saturday, OU made just five treys on 27 attempts Tuesday. South Carolina (11-8, 2-4) was 9 for 20 (45%) from deep.
The Gamecocks scored the first 11 points of the game, all by forward Elijah Strong. The junior made a short jumper on the opening possession before hitting 3-pointers on the next three trips, all in the first 2 1/2 minutes. South Carolina stretched its lead to 14 points at 28-14 with 7:46 left in the period before OU went on a 22-9 run to make it a 37-36 contest with 10 seconds left. USC's EJ Walker gave his team a three-point halftime cushion after grabbing an offensive rebound and hitting a basket at the buzzer.
South Carolina opened the second half on a 12-5 spurt to go up 10. A Brown 3-pointer and
Nijel Pack basket on a goaltending call quickly cut the OU deficit to five, but that's as close as the Sooners got the rest of the contest.
Pack, who entered the day ranked fourth in the 16-team SEC with his 3.2 3-pointers per game and .432 3-point field goal percentage, did not make a 3 on his seven tries. He finished 3 for 13 from the field and with nine points.
Fellow sixth-year guard
Jadon Jones was held scoreless on the night (0 for 4 from the field), but did contribute five rebounds, three blocks and four steals. It was his second straight game with four thefts. He also has seven blocks over the last two outings.
OU fell to 5-2 in the series and to 2-2 against the Gamecocks in Columbia.
The Sooners are back in action Saturday when they take on Missouri at 1 p.m. CT. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
