COLUMBIA, Mo. — On the verge of a big road win, Oklahoma fell victim to a pair of buzzer-beating 3-pointers — the first at the end of regulation and the second in overtime — in an 88-87 loss to Missouri on Saturday afternoon.
After Tae Davis hit two free throws to give OU an 81-78 lead with 5.6 seconds left in the second half, Missouri's Trent Pierce hit a 37-footer with no time left to force overtime. It was Pierce's only field goal of the day.
The Sooners led most of the extra session and took an 87-85 advantage on an Xzayvier Brown shot in the lane with 4 seconds remaining, but MU forward Mark Mitchell made a 3-pointer at the horn from the right wing for the one-point win. Mitchell entered the day with just seven 3-point makes on the year.
Oklahoma (11-9, 1-6) outshot Missouri (14-6, 4-3) 48%-45% from the field and 44%-29% from 3-point range (12 makes to six) but was outrebounded 41-29 and outscored 19-3 in second-chance points. The Tigers grabbed 17 offensive boards to OU's five and attempted 11 more shots.
Guards Nijel Pack (25) and Xzayvier Brown (19) accounted for more than half of the team's points and 11 of its 12 assists. Pack broke out of a mini offensive slump by going 8 for 13 from the field, 5 for 8 from 3-point range and 4 for 4 from the foul line. He had averaged 8.7 points on 3-for-19 (16%) 3-point shooting over the previous three outings.
Brown was 5 for 11 from the floor, hit a pair of triples, was 7 for 9 from the foul line and handed out a game-high six assists. It was his ninth performance of at least 18 points in the last 11 contests.
The Sooners also got double-digit points from forward Derrion Reid (12) and guard Jadon Jones (10). Center Kirill Elatontsev played 26 minutes and contributed nine points and a team-high-tying five rebounds. Davis also scored nine points.
OU led 37-36 at halftime behind 50% field goal (12 for 24) and 3-point (6 for 12) shooting. The 3-pointers came from six players. The Sooners didn't take their first lead until the 9:02 mark on a Reid jumper and pushed their advantage to as many as three points twice. Missouri made just one first-half 3-pointer on 10 attempts.
The second half was tight throughout. OU led the majority of the period and went up 70-64 with 6 minutes left, only to see Missouri rattle off eight straight points for a 72-70 lead. An Elatontsev bucket at the end of the shot clock put the Sooners ahead 79-78 with 1:08 remaining, and Davis's free throws gave the Sooners a 3-point cushion before Pierce's heave at the buzzer.
Oklahoma scored six points in overtime (four from Brown and two from Pack) and didn't trail until Mitchell's 3 with no time left.
OU's loss was its sixth straight after posting a league-opening win over Ole Miss. Missouri improved to 12-1 at home.
The Sooners start a two-game homestand when they play No. 20 Arkansas on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT at Lloyd Noble Center.
