ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. –
Drew Goodman is one shot off the individual lead and No. 6 Oklahoma sits in third place, 17 strokes above the 54-hole, eight-team cut after two rounds at the SEC Championship.
The Sooners (3, -18) were led by Goodman,
Jase Summy and
Ryder Cowan, who each fired a 4-under 66 Thursday at the par-70 Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. The five-day championship includes 54 holes of stroke play, followed by match play for the top eight teams on Saturday and Sunday to determine a team champion.
Goodman (T2, -8) carded his second consecutive 66 to climb the leaderboard and put himself in contention for the SEC individual title. The senior All-American, who owns nine career top-five finishes and 18 top 10s, will look to capture his first collegiate win in Friday's final round. The Norman native opened with a birdie on the 10th, made the turn at 4-under and then parred every hole on the front to stay within one shot of LSU's Jay Mendell, whom he'll be paired with Friday morning.
Cowan (T14, -4) matched Goodman's 66, playing the back nine in 3-under and the front in 1-under to surge into the top 15. The Edmond product is chasing his ninth career top-10 finish.
Freshman
Clark Van Gaalen (T19, -3) contributed a counting score of even-par 70, highlighted by three birdies on the front nine. A rough patch on the back, including three bogeys, dropped him a few spots on the leaderboard.
Summy (T23, -2) bounced back from Wednesday's round with a 66 to move under par for the week. The junior, who owns four straight top-10 finishes including a win at Maridoe, will need another low number Friday to keep his streak.
Matthew Troutman (T42, +2) posted a 1-over 71 for the second straight day to round out the Sooners' scorecard.
Oklahoma's 268 (-12) was the second-lowest team round of the day, trailing only No. 7 LSU's 263 (-17). The Tigers erased a seven-shot deficit and are now tied with No. 2 Auburn atop the leaderboard at 26-under.
The current cut line is 1-under, occupied by No. 15 Alabama and Arkansas who share ninth. Tiebreakers will be used if needed after Friday's final round. Match play quarterfinals and semifinals are set for Saturday, with the championship match airing Sunday on SEC Network.
The Sooners will tee off Friday at 7 a.m. CT from the first hole, paired with co-leaders Auburn and LSU.
