Sooners Make Trek West for Pauma Valley Invite
March 16, 2025 | Men's Golf
NORMAN — No. 6 Oklahoma men's golf continues its spring season at the Pauma Valley Invitational this week. The Sooners tee off in the two-day, 54-hole event at Pauma Valley Country Club on Monday against eight top-25 teams, including five of the nation's top 10. Oklahoma will play 36 holes on Monday and a final round on Tuesday to crown a team and individual champion.
Oklahoma made its debut at the tournament last season, finishing alone in fourth. Then-freshman Ryder Cowan finished in a tie for fifth while Stephen Campbell Jr. (T12) and Ben Lorenz (T17) grabbed top-20 placements. No. 3 Vanderbilt won the event, finishing at 20-under par to win by seven strokes. Oklahoma State's Jonas Baumgartner birdied the final hole to claim medalist honors at 9-under par.
Head coach Ryan Hybl, the program's winningest coach, has led the Sooners to 13 straight NCAA Finals, a 2017 national title and three conference championships since 2009. With 47 tournament wins, he ranks fourth among active coaches and has coached 14 Sooners to 30 All-America honors. The 2022 Dave Williams National Coach of the Year, Hybl was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame in 2024.
During the fall season, Oklahoma secured three team victories and compiled a 61-5-1 record, finishing third in the only two events it did not win. The Sooners led the nation in total wins, with Ryan Hybl's squad claiming titles at the Valero Texas Collegiate, Ben Hogan Collegiate and Ka'anapali Classic. This spring, Oklahoma has recorded back-to-back fifth-place finishes but looks to regain momentum in Pauma Valley. Through eight events, the sixth-ranked Sooners have defeated 78 teams, the second most in the country behind Colorado, but their quality of wins is significantly higher, boasting a 75.4 rating compared to the Buffaloes' 51.3.
Head coach Ryan Hybl's lineup features Jase Summy, Ryder Cowan, Cameron Cheek, Drew Goodman and Stephen Campbell Jr.
